Bedingham, Harmer, Verreynne among those called home by CSA

Cricket South Africa has brought its centrally contracted players home ahead of the domestic summer, leaving several County Championship sides without key overseas signings for the competition’s final three rounds.

David Bedingham (Durham), Simon Harmer (Essex) and Kyle Verreynne (Nottinghamshire) are all affected by the recall, with South Africa’s home summer, featuring series against Australia, Bangladesh and England, beginning on 9 October.

Nottinghamshire have brought in New Zealand wicketkeeper-batter Mitch Hay as they push for a second consecutive Division One title, while Durham, who sit top of Division Two, have signed Mayank Agarwal to cover for Bedingham’s absence.

Essex confirmed Harmer will miss this week’s fixture against Yorkshire at Headingley, despite earlier talks with CSA over his availability under a hybrid contract, and are also without Sam Cook and Jordan Cox through Test call-ups, alongside four further players sidelined by injury.

Worcestershire, meanwhile, will be without Beyers Swanepoel for the rest of the season after he returned home to deal with domestic cricket matters. Pakistan leg-spinner Usama Mir has been brought in as his replacement for the final three matches.
