Washington, United States: Alexandra Eala capped her giant-killing run at the Washington Open with a 4-6, 6-4, 6-0 victory over top-seeded Jessica Pegula on Monday to become the first player from the Philippines to win a WTA title.

Playing in her second final, after a runner-up finish at Eastbourne last year, the 21-year-old left-hander produced a rock-solid service display and an impressive array of winners to deny third-ranked Pegula a 12th career title and a third this year.

The scoreboard showed a match time of one hour and 45 minutes, but it took nearly 24 hours to complete.

Pegula had won the first set 6-4 and Eala was up 2-1 in the second on Sunday when officials postponed the finish until Monday after lengthy rain delays.

The pair had waited through a three-hour delay before starting, and once the match was halted it was another five hours before officials called a halt for the day.

That also saw the ATP final between 10th-ranked American Taylor Fritz and 19-year-old Spaniard Rafael Jodar postponed.

Pegula opened the action on Monday with a nervy service hold for 2-2.

But she could make no inroads on Eala's serve and Eala broke Pegula in the 10th game to take the set and force a third.

The final set was all Eala, to the delight of a vocal contingent of supporters.

Eala had been enthusiastically cheered all week as she made her way to the final with wins over second-seeded Elina Svitolina, third-seeded former world number one Naomi Osaka and defending champion Leylah Fernandez.

Eala is now projected to rise to a career-high 20th in the world.

وأعرب السيد عبد الله الدوسري، المدير التنفيذي للاتحاد القطري للرياضة للجميع، عن سعادته بالنجاح الذي حققته بطولة البادبول الصيفية، مشيداً بالمستوى الفني، والحضور والمشاركة، وقال، تميزت المنافسات بالقوة والندية والإثارة، وأكدت تطور مستوى المشاركين، كما أن المشاركة الكبيرة من الشباب، تعكس مدى انتشار لعبة البادبول في قطر، وتؤكد الاهتمام المتزايد بهذا النوع من الألعاب الرياضية، حيث أتاحت البطولة فرصة جيدة للتنافس والاحتكاك، واكتساب الخبرات.

Zamalek have terminated their contract with Seifeddine Jaziri by mutual consent, ending the Tunisian striker’s five and a half year spell.

The White Knights announced the agreement on Monday, describing the separation as entirely amicable.

Zamalek did not disclose the financial terms of the settlement, but Jaziri’s contract had been due to run until June 2027, meaning the 33-year-old now becomes a free agent one season early.

The club thanked Jaziri for his “professionalism, contributions and achievements” in the white shirt before wishing him success in the next stage of his career.

The decision represents a sudden reversal after Jaziri’s agent, Hazem Fetouh, said just a couple of days ago that the forward would remain at Zamalek.

Jaziri had previously submitted a complaint to FIFA over unpaid wages reportedly covering seven months.

Zamalek subsequently paid the outstanding amount before the expiry of the player’s formal notice, before entering negotiations over an early termination.

The club’s statement said all matters relating to the contract had now been settled but did not clarify whether Jaziri received compensation for the final year of his deal.

Jaziri had initially joined Zamalek on loan from Arab Contractors in January 2021. The Cairo club then activated their purchase option at the end of that season and handed him a permanent contract.

The Tunisia international made 185 appearances across all competitions, scoring 48 goals and providing 19 assists.

That total made Jaziri Zamalek’s highest-scoring foreign player, surpassing former Yemen striker Ali Mohsen’s longstanding record of 47 goals.

Moreover, Jaziri collected seven trophies during his time with the White Knights.

He won the Egyptian Premier League in 2020/21, 2021/22 and 2025/26, as well as the Egypt Cup in 2020/21 and 2024/25. The forward also helped Zamalek lift the 2023/24 CAF Confederation Cup and the 2024 CAF Super Cup.

Toronto, Canada: Naomi Osaka is hoping her success last year in Montreal, where she finished runner-up to Victoria Mboko, will translate as the WTA's 1000 event in Canada shifts to Toronto.

The four-time Grand Slam champion from Japan is coming off a semi-final run on the hard courts of Washington, where she fell to eventual champion Alexandra Eala of the Philippines.

"I did better than last year in DC, so I'm just hoping to keep the ball rolling," Osaka said.

"I haven't historically played super, super well here, so I'm just hoping to change that this year.

"I can try to recall Montreal, but I would like to kind of treat the cities separately," added Osaka, whose best run in Toronto -- which alternates hosting duties with Montreal each year -- was a quarter-final appearance back in 2019.

The former world number one is seeded 11th this year and aiming to build momentum as the August 31 start of the US Open approaches.

Osaka earned the last of her four major titles at the 2021 Australian Open and has yet to regain the heights she reached before taking an extended maternity leave in 2023.

But she made it to the US Open semi-finals last year and reached the last 16 at the French Open for the first time this year before a career-best quarter-final at Wimbledon.

"I would just hope to gain a lot of confidence leading into New York," she said.

"I lost my last match, but it's helped me figure out what I want to do exactly, or how I want to take my tennis."

Osaka is in the same quarter as second-seeded Australian Open champion Elena Rybakina and in the fourth round she could find herself up against fifth-seeded French Open champion Mirra Andreeva.

Andreeva, who suffered a shock second-round exit at Wimbledon, will face a tricky opening match against former world number one Karolina Pliskova, who beat Ukraine's Oleksandra Oliynykova 6-4, 6-4 on Monday.

Osaka will open against Hungary's Panna Uvardy, who was up 2-6, 7-6 (7/3), 2-0 against Eva Lys when the German retired because of injury in a match in which she led the second set 5-2.

It was a jam-packed schedule on the second day of first-round play.

Among the winners, Poland's Magdalena Frech defeated France's Leolia Jeanjean 7-5, 6-3 to line up a meeting with third-seeded two-time champion Jessica Pegula.

Pegula beat Frech last week on the way to the final in Washington, where the American fell to Eala in the rain-delayed title match on Monday.

In other early matches, American Kayla Day beat Diane Parry of France 3-6, 6-3, 7-5 to book a clash with fourth-seeded Coco Gauff.

World number one Aryna Sabalenka is the top seed in the tournament.

After disappointing runs at the French Open and Wimbledon the Belarusian is aiming to reassert her dominance on hard courts, where her lone defeat this year was to Rybakina in the Australian Open final.
