Another tactically astute performance and teamwork on the green saw the home team add to their 41 points accumulated on Day One to tighten their grip on the Trophy division at 82 points.

Sitting a distant second are VetLab Sports Club who boast 41 points as Kenya Railway occupy third place with 27 points — the prospect of relegation to the Shield category becoming a grim reality by the minute.

Setting off the bountiful harvest for the hosts were the pair of Benson Murimi and Kushil Nathwani who secured a 2&1 victory over the Railway duo of Morgan Chirchir and Saluni Meely.

Jay Sandhu and Quram Bhattii then extended Muthaiga’s lead with a 6&4 win over VetLab’s Manav Shah and Jean D’Amour (Jnr).

The hosts’ good run against VetLab continued with Bo Ciera and Daniel Kiragu’s 1-up victory over Wasim Ali and Krish Beiju Shah (Jnr).

Neer Chandaria and Ronan Patel (Jnr) then wrapped up the unbeaten morning session for Muthaiga, winning 2&1 against Railway’s Edward Manywanda and Kaash Padam.

Meanwhile, in the Shield category, Sigona Golf Club extended their lead to 68 points, 20 ahead of second-placed Thika Sports Club (48.5 points) as Nyali Golf and Country Club sit third with 33.5 points.

Similarly, Golf Park picked up from where they left off on Friday, widening their lead to 56 points in the Plaque division, as Kiambu (50.5 points) sit a close second, with Royal Nairobi in third place with 43.5 points.

Windsor Golf Hotel and Country Club added 38 points to their previous 36 to maintain a stranglehold on the leaderboard in Bowl category, ahead of Limuru (46.5 points) and Karen Country Club (11.5 points).

Ruiru Sports Club also tightened their grip on the lead in the Mug category, cruising at 63 points to remain on course for promotion to the Bowl category.

Second-placed Eldoret Club were one of the biggest improvers of the day, adding to Friday’s 18 points to attain an overall 55 as Kericho Golf Club sit third with 14 points.

The curtains come down on the competition on Sunday with the singles matches, starting with Plaque, Bowl and Mug in the morning before those in the Trophy and Shield categories in the afternoon.

NAIROBI, Kenya, Aug 22 – Ahead of the new FKF Premier League season, two of the country’s top clubs will come head-to-head on Sunday in the Super Cup, setting the stage for what is anticipated to be a grueling campaign.

Tusker FC head coach Julien Mette says the club’s preparations for Sunday’s FKF Super Cup clash against Gor Mahia have provided valuable lessons ahead of what promises to be a demanding 2026/27 season.

Tusker FC face FKF Premier League champions Gor Mahia at Nyayo Stadium on Sunday at 3:00 pm, with the Mozzart Bet Cup holders looking to claim the first piece of silverware of the new season.

Mette says the club’s participation in the recent CECAFA tournament in Rwanda has provided the team with an important test against high-level opposition as they prepare for both domestic and continental competition.

“We have done a preparation that is quite interesting so far. Playing the CECAFA tournament is a very good thing because we faced top teams that prepared us for the CAF Confederation Cup. This was a good level of preparation for us,” said Mette.

The coach is overseeing a new-look Tusker squad following significant movement in the playing unit, with some experienced players joining alongside a strong contingent of young prospects.

Mette says the club’s recruitment strategy is designed to balance immediate performance with the long-term development of young talent.

“We have two types of new players. We have the experienced players who have played at international or continental level and are here to perform and provide leadership. Then we have the young prospects, with many under-20 and under-21 players who have potential and are part of the project,” she said.

“We have to win, but we also have to include young players and help them develop. That is an important part of the project.”

The coach acknowledges that integrating a large number of new players, particularly foreign recruits experiencing Kenyan football for the first time, has presented its own challenges.

“Many players left, and many players arrived, so we have to welcome them and integrate them. For some of the foreign players, it is the first time they are playing abroad, so it is a big change. The staff has had to work hard to integrate them socially and into the club, but they have responded well, and the guys are working hard. I am optimistic,” Mette said.

Tusker will, however, head into Sunday’s clash with several injury concerns, potentially opening the door for some of the club’s younger players to feature.

Mette says several players under the age of 20 could be handed opportunities against Gor Mahia.

“We have many injuries for Sunday, so we cannot field the best team possible at the moment. But it is also an opportunity for some players who are part of the rotation to show what they are capable of. Some players in the starting line-up will be under 20 or under 19. It will be a big emotion for them, but also a big opportunity to show their talent,” she said.

The coach expects a competitive encounter against Gor Mahia, with the rivalry adding another layer to a match that comes with a trophy at stake.

“We are ready for a Gor Mahia team who will play to win because it is a historical rivalry. We beat them the last time we played some months ago, so maybe they want to take their revenge. It is also a final; it is a Super Cup, so there is a trophy at the end of the 90 minutes,” said Mette.

While Mette is keen to lift the Super Cup, she says the bigger objective is to establish a clear identity and playing philosophy that can carry the team through the season, particularly in their CAF Confederation Cup campaign.

“For me, the long term is more important. In September we qualify for CAF, and we want to enter the group stage. We have to have a proper identity, a type of play and a style of play. We must be strong and respect our principles. This is how we win in the long term,” she said.

Assistant captain Tom Teka says the squad is confident and has drawn important lessons from its time in Rwanda.

“The team is very ready. Kila mtu amejiprepare vizuri. We have had good weeks since we came back from Rwanda and we have learned lessons from the tournament. As of now, everyone is ready, and the team is very ready,” said Teka.

Teka believes Sunday’s encounter will also provide a valuable test for players who are yet to experience the intensity of a major fixture against Gor Mahia.

“The challenge will be for those who are not used to playing in front of a big crowd against Gor Mahia. Obviously, the fans will push them, but we also challenge ourselves because this Gor game will help guide our preparation for the CAF games,” he said.

With the first trophy of the season on offer, Teka has urged Tusker supporters to turn up in numbers and back the team.

“Fans should come and support their boys on the pitch. They will leave happy. It is a chance to win the first trophy, and it will also help us throughout the season in the games that are coming. We will push to win,” he said.

Tusker FC will face Gor Mahia at Nyayo Stadium on Sunday, with kick-off scheduled for 3:00 pm.

Kaizer Chiefs have been hit by a number of injuries early in the new season, with most of their problems coming in defence.

Amakhosi currently have three left-backs unavailable, while other players have also picked up injuries.

Despite the setbacks, Chiefs have made a strong start to the Betway Premiership campaign and currently sit second on the table behind Soweto rivals Orlando Pirates.

With five new signings brought in during the off-season, Chiefs have looked impressive, particularly in attack, but injuries have tested their squad depth at the back.

Which Kaizer Chiefs players are injured?

Paseka Mako and Nkhanyiso Shinga have suffered longer-term injuries, while Bradley Cross and Reeve Frosler have dealt with less serious setbacks.

Mako fractured his arm during a pre-season match against Al Kholood in July. The left-back is expected to be sidelined until September after being ruled out for between six and eight weeks.

Shinga, meanwhile, has been recovering from an Achilles tendon injury suffered in March. He is edging closer to a return to full fitness after making just one appearance before sustaining the injury.

Mayo has also undergone surgery for a hernia and is expected to return in September after missing the start of the season.

Frosler suffered a Grade 2 hamstring tear but is expected to be available for Chiefs’ next match.

Chiefs strong in midfield and attack

While injuries have affected the defensive department, Kaizer Chiefs appear to have plenty of options in midfield and attack.

The likes of Langelihle Phili have also impressed in recent weeks, giving Amakhosi another attacking option as they look to maintain their strong start to the campaign.

Damian Willemse 7: He didn’t put a foot wrong, chased hard and made some good tackles, and was excellent under the high ball. Made some nice runs, but without impact.

Cheslin Kolbe 7: He kicked well at goal and went on one or two good runs, showing off his magical feet. Jumped high and strongly for balls and made his tackles.

Jesse Kriel 5: He didn’t get many chances on attack, but made his tackles. Didn’t have much of an impact on the game, shifted to the wing early, and left the action in the 58th minute.

Damian de Allende 6: In his 100th Test, didn’t get as many chances as normal to carry the ball. Made a few big tackles, but also had little impact overall.

Kurt-Lee Arendse N/A: He went off early after a head knock.

Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu 6: He ran hard at the opposition and tried to inject some energy into his team-mates. Kicked well out of hand, made some tackles, missed some tackles.

Grant Williams 6: He was better and more dangerous out wide playing wing after replacing Kolbe. Had a kick charged down, which led to a try. Missed a few tackles.

Jasper Wiese 8: One of his best Tests for the Boks. He was everywhere … he made numerous carries over the gainline and tackled superbly. He did, however, lose a few balls in contact.

Pieter-Steph du Toit 6: Surprisingly one of the quieter Tests for the captain on the day. He made some tackles, and the occasional carry and lineout win, but was never quite in it.

Paul de Villiers 7: He was really busy in the first half, made the occasional breakdown steal, and put in several tackles and good carries, but faded later on.

Ruan Nortjé 6: He dominated in the lineouts and took several balls. He also made a number of tackles, but went missing in the second half.

Eben Etzebeth 5: Not quite the enforcer of before … got pinged for penalties a few times, but made one excellent lineout steal and tackled well enough.

Wilco Louw 8: A superb scrummaging performance, one area where the Boks dominated. He also made some tackles.

Malcolm Marx 7: He was busy at the breakdowns, making one steal, but missed his first lineout throw. He also lost the ball going over for a try. Contributed to excellent scrumming effort.

Ox Nche 8: After a long injury layoff, came back and scrummed superbly. He also made some big hits in the first half.

Bench:

Jan-Hendrik Wessels 5: Got on in the 67th minute and failed to make an impact.

Gerhard Steenekamp 6: Came on in the 46th minute, scrummed superbly, went off in the 67th.

Zachary Porthen 5: Entered in the 62nd minute and didn’t have any impact.

Cobus Wiese 5: Only got on in the 74th, made one big carry, but lost the ball in contact.

André Esterhuizen 7: Got on early for Arendse, powered his way over for a try. Off again in the 63rd.

Marco van Staden 4: Got on in the 62nd minute, but only picked up a yellow card.

Cobus Reinach 4: Entered the action in the 58th minute, didn’t get much opportunity, got a yellow card.

Manie Libbok 5: Came on in the 63rd minute, unable to make any impact.

McLaren driver Lando Norris took pole position for Sunday’s Dutch Grand Prix, the world champion pipping Mercedes rivals George Russell and Kimi Antonelli into second and third place.

The British driver set a time of one minute and 11.163 seconds, 0.102 seconds faster than compatriot Russell, to take a critical advantage this weekend’s race.

“It doesn’t get any better, a little surprised honestly,” said Norris, who had complained his McLaren was lacking in pace after finishing behind Russell in Saturday’s sprint race.

“A decent lap. I was pushing as you’ve seen how close it is, every one-hundredth (of a second) can make a difference,” Norris added.

Russell had been the quickest driver all weekend but was forced into second place on the grid on the last qualifying lap that was affected by light rain.

World championship leader Antonelli will be third on the grid, ruing a difficult session with an error in turn one costing him a few crucial tenths of a second.
