Jean de Villiers says Tony Brown’s influence on Vusi Moyo’s eye-catching Springbok performance against the Barbarians went far beyond tactics.

Moyo was one of the surprise selections in Rassie Erasmus’ match 23 for the Boks’ season opener in Gqeberha, having played just one senior professional match before earning his opportunity in green and gold.

The young flyhalf wasted little time making an impression.

After entering the game in the second half, Moyo helped ignite the Boks’ attack with a confident display that included an assist for a try by Faf de Klerk and a long pass that paved the way for another score.

Speaking on The Verdict podcast, De Villiers revealed a moment before Moyo entered the field that highlighted Brown’s investment in the next generation of Springboks.

“We know now, from an attacking point of view and technically, how good Tony Brown is,” said De Villiers. “But I think this is one element that we don’t see.”

The former Bok captain explained how Brown left the coaches’ box shortly before Moyo’s introduction to spend time with the youngster.

“I saw him coming down from the coaching box to Vusi Moyo,” said De Villiers. “All the other reserves were already on. He came down to him just to settle him down and just have a quick little word about what he’s expecting of him.”

Former Bok loose forward Schalk Burger suggested Brown was preparing Moyo for the pictures he would encounter on the field, before sending him into the contest.

De Villiers believes the brief interaction revealed another side to the highly regarded attack coach.

“Arm around the shoulder and that’s it,” he said. “I don’t think people realise the value of that, not just being technically good, but being able to really care about the individual.

“Yes, he’s going to the All Blacks after the World Cup, but I think anyone who ever thought the loyalty is not there, that kind of shows it.”

The England squad for the Nations Championship comprises a strong mix of youth and experience and will pose a formidable challenge, said Springbok head coach Rassie Erasmus.

The Springboks host England at Ellis Park next Saturday in the tournament opener after the teams failed to meet on last season’s outgoing tour, a widely discussed omission given that South Africa even played Japan in London.

Both teams have named strong squads for the tournament, although Erasmus said on Tuesday that his would likely change after the England Test as he manages his squad for upcoming matches against Scotland and Wales, and has already considered players and combinations for then.

England head coach Steve Borthwick has rested regular captain Maro Itoje, with Test centurion Jamie George named as stand-in skipper.

South Africa-born former Junior Springbok centre Benhard Janse van Rensburg is also in line to make his Test debut for his adopted country.

Springboks to work for win

Erasmus said England’s squad would test the Springboks.

“The England squad is good,” he said. “If you look at the average age of that squad, I think it’s 27. The average Test caps is about 32.

“It’s a young but experienced squad. You will get youth and a fearless team.

“It’s a very competitive squad, a squad we know we will have to work really hard at Ellis Park to get the win.”

He added that England were likely to change tactics after a close Six Nations campaign in which they finished second behind France.

“They always change their structures to evolve, like all of us. We more or less think we know what they are going to do but then you get to the day and they do something totally different.”

Erasmus also suggested the aerial battle would be key, particularly given the number of Northampton players in the England squad.

“There are a few guys coming through the Premiership who are very good in the air, which is something we were very good at last year. That is going to be a massive battle.

“Tactically, Steve is a guy who works with numbers and likes to chase strengths. It’s difficult to coach against a coach like that. We don’t know what they will do next Saturday.”

The hype around Henry Pollock

There is also hype around rising England star Henry Pollock, who will face the Springboks for the first time.

“Henry Pollock is like Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu. I don’t always think the players want the hype.

“But what counts is what they do on the field, and Henry certainly does his job on the field. That is something we have to contain.

“If I were a coach and working with him I would look only at his output, and his output is awesome.”

France coach Fabien Galthié has grown frustrated with the constant speculation surrounding superstar scrumhalf Antoine Dupont ahead of next month’s Nations Championship campaign.

Speaking after naming a 33-man squad on Tuesday, Galthie dismissed questions about Dupont’s involvement, describing the ongoing debate as “bordering on annoying”.

The France captain was not included in the initial group selected for Tests against the All Blacks, Wallabies and Japan. However, reports in France suggest Dupont remains in line to join the squad after Saturday’s Top 14 final between Toulouse and Montpellier.

Under an agreement between the French Rugby Federation and the Ligue Nationale de Rugby, Galthié will be allowed to add nine players from the Top 14 final to his touring party.

Those players would miss France’s opening clash in Christchurch on 4 July, but could become available later in the campaign.

With Clermont scrumhalf Baptiste Jauneau dropping out of the squad, only two specialist No 9s have been selected in tour captain Maxime Lucu and Nolann Le Garrec, leaving room for Dupont should he be added after the domestic final.

“Let’s talk about the team leaving firstly,” Galthie told reporters. “It’s bordering on annoying.”

France’s squad also features the return of record try-scorer Damian Penaud, who missed the entire Six Nations campaign despite helping Bordeaux Bègles claim Investec Champions Cup glory this season.

Seven uncapped players have been included, among them Olympic gold medallists Aaron Grandidier-Nkanang and Theo Forner, as well as Australia-born prop Moses Alo-Emile and lock Tom Staniforth.

“We’re giving ourselves the right to be ambitious,” said Galthié. “We’re giving ourselves the right to dream.”

France fly to Brisbane this week before opening their Nations Championship campaign against the All Blacks. They then face Australia in Brisbane on 11 July before concluding the tour against Japan in Tokyo on 18 July.
