Pitso praises team effort as Bafana sink Guinea
Pitso Mosimane admitted Bafana Bafana need to work on chance conversion after their 2-1 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying Group D win over Guinea at the Orlando Amstel Arena on Saturday. umafrika.club
Bafana’s Pitso – ‘The South African challenge is that we don’t score easily’
But ‘Jingles’ was happy enough with the performance that ensured a vital three points at home against probably Bafana’s main group rivals.
Paulo Duarte’s side gave Bafana plenty of problems and looked like they might snatch a draw when Seydouba Cisse made it 1-1 in the 69th minute. But a 77th minute strike from Samukele Kabini made sure Bafana won the day in Mosimane’s first game in his latest spell as head coach.
“What a game!,” said Mosimane after the match.
“You have to give respect to Guinea, with the level and quality they have. You ask yourself why this team has not been in the Cup of Nations for so long”.
Guinea did not qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, though they did reach the quarterfinals of the 2023 edition.
“It was very difficult for us, we were playing at home and had to attack,” added Mosimane.
“I think we started well, showing we were playing at home, the mentality was good. We pressed at the beginning and stole a few balls, we knew how they played. Their midfield is very good. But we pressed, we thought we could get something, and we got something.
‘Ime and Makhanya did exceptionally well’
“Unfortunately we didn’t take the chances we created. But we put pressure on and showed we wanted to score. We had many free kicks and corners. The South African challenge is that we don’t score easily. We score two out of six chances maybe. But we had the right mentality, we wanted to play and fight and press.
“We created opportunities. You can complain about not scoring, but you cannot complain about not creating.”
In the end, Bafana’s only goal in the first half came from Ime Okon, who like Kabini netted his first ever senior international goal.
“I think Ime and (Olwethu) Makhanya did exceptionally well,” said Mosimane on his centre back pairing.
“I was happy for Makhanya to start, he has not been having a chance.”
Sharks overpower Ospreys
Luan Giliomee scored a brace while Vusi Moyo kicked 14 points as the Sharks opened their URC season with a five-try win against the Ospreys in Durban on Saturday.
The Sharks raced into a 28-14 half-time lead at Kings Park after a blistering opening 40 minutes in which they scored four tries, all converted by flyhalf Moyo, who also split the uprights with two penalties.
The hosts survived an early Ospreys response after the break before pulling away to secure a 41-24 bonus-point victory.
REPORT: Lions overcome youthful Leinster
JP Pietersen’s men finished 10th last season after the former Springbok took permanent charge in February, and Saturday afternoon’s result offers evidence his rebuild is on track.
A late change forced Pietersen’s hand before kick-off, with inside centre Janco Purchase drafted into midfield after Murray Koster was ruled out with a minor niggle.
Sharks skipper and No 8 Nick Hatton finished a slick attack after Jaden Hendrikse’s offload, before flanker Manu Tshiuka crossed from another flowing move.

The Ospreys hit back through winger Luke Morgan, but the Sharks restored their 21-point cushion when speedster Litelihle Bester won the race to a grubber.
Captain Sam Parry gave the visitors further hope on the stroke of half-time, finishing a powerful maul, with flyhalf Lawson Creighton splitting the uprights for a second time in the first stanza.

Flanker Liam Wright reduced the deficit with a try shortly after the restart, but Moyo steadied the Sharks from the kicking tee.
Man of the Match Giliomee added another try after a slick passing move, before the Welsh tourists replied through No 15 Lestyn Hopkins, yet the Durbanites controlled the closing stages to claim a convincing triumph.
Attention now turns to round two when the Sharks host defending champions Leinster next Saturday, while the Ospreys head up to Johannesburg to face the Lions.
SHARKS – Tries: Nick Hatton, Manu Tshituka, Luan Giliomee (2), Litelihle Bester. Conversions: Vusi Moyo (4), Siya Masuku. Penalties: Moyo (2).
OSPREYS – Tries: Luke Morgan, Sam Parry, Liam Wright, Iestyn Hopkins. Conversions: Lawson Creighton (2).

Wanderers could give Aussies a way back
The Wanderers could help Australia level the series, but Josh Inglis’ injury and a decision on Pat Cummins complicate their preparations.
Australia could find the Wanderers more to their liking after their troubles against spin in Durban. Whether they can take advantage may depend on how boldly they approach selection.
The Johannesburg venue is known for pace, bounce and a ball that travels further at altitude. If Sunday’s surface offers those familiar characteristics, Australia’s batters could find it easier to play through the line than they did at Kingsmead.
That could make the Wanderers an equaliser. If Keshav Maharaj and Bjorn Fortuin both play, a surface offering less assistance to slow bowling could reduce their influence after they shared six wickets in South Africa’s 67-run victory in the opener.

But Australia’s problem runs deeper than one difficult afternoon. They average just 21.57 against left-arm spin in men’s ODIs since the 2023 World Cup.

A change of venue could help, but their shot selection still needs work. Maharaj and Fortuin will have opportunities if Australia continue trying to force boundaries when singles would keep the innings moving.
The conditions also strengthen the argument for bringing Cummins into the attack, provided he is ready for the workload. His ability to hit a hard length and extract bounce could give Australia another way to break partnerships.
Cummins missed the opener as Australia prioritised his preparation for the Test series. Cricket Australia had already identified the Wanderers or Potchefstroom as possible opportunities for his ODI return, although his inclusion has not been confirmed.
With the series at stake, there is a strong cricketing case for playing him alongside Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood. The selectors must weigh that immediate benefit against their plans for the three Tests.

Replacing Jack Edwards would be one option, although it would weaken the lower-order batting. Edwards also offered encouraging control on debut, conceding only 23 runs from the 30 balls he bowled to Matthew Breetzke and Marco Jansen.
Australia already face one enforced change. Inglis has been ruled out of the remaining two ODIs after fracturing his right index finger while keeping wicket in Durban, with Alex Carey expected to take the gloves.
For Carey, that would mean an immediate return after being dropped for the opener. His experience would be valuable, but Australia would also need runs from him in a middle order that failed to build on Marsh’s explosive start at Kingsmead.
The Wanderers could bring Australia’s strengths into play. Bringing Cummins back would add to that threat, but losing Inglis leaves them with another problem to solve before Sunday’s 10am start.
