Emotional Guimaraes wanted to join Arsenal – Wilson

LONDON, England, August 7, 2026 – Newcastle United sporting director Ross Wilson says the club did not plan to sell Bruno Guimaraes, but their “very emotional” captain wanted to join Arsenal.

“There’s no part in saying it was part of our strategy and was in our thinking this summer – it wasn’t.

“But we have got to be flexible and react to things that happen.”

Guimaraes bid a tearful farewell to his team-mates and to staff before leaving the club’s pre-season training camp in Spain.

He will become the fourth key player to move on in less than a year.

Sandro Tonali and Anthony Gordon joined Tottenham Hotspur and Barcelona respectively earlier in the window, while Alexander Isak went to Liverpool last summer.

Losing Guimaraes is a particular blow, given his status as the club’s talisman, but Newcastle chief executive David Hopkinson suggested Arsenal had hoped to pay a smaller fee after lower sums were initially floated for a player who turns 29 in November.

However, Hopkinson recognised that Newcastle, conversely, would have liked “an even higher number” for such an influential figure.

“You’re dealing with very sophisticated actors on each side,” he said. “That’s what negotiation looks like.

“It’s a fee that satisfies us. If you want to put a merchandising spin on it, it’s the highest fee for a player in that position at that age, and all those things come into play.

“Is it a good deal for Newcastle United? I believe it is, but Arsenal are getting a very special player and person. It’s worked from a financial perspective for both sides.”

Newcastle are active in the market to bring in a replacement.

Four of Newcastle‘s five signings this summer have been aged 20 and under, but the club are looking to sign a midfielder with a little more experience, and make a couple of further additions beyond that before the window shuts on 1 September.

However, Wilson warned they don’t want to make “any mistakes by jumping to do something that we don’t really want to do to tick a box”.

Pour le FC Nantes, l’arrivée de Saïdou Sow constitue également un renfort d’expérience en défense, avec un joueur déjà intégré au groupe et familier des exigences du club.

What to expect from the Springboks

South Africa will look to play at a high tempo around the rucks.

Feinberg-Mngomezulu’s tactical kicking will also play an important role against the Pumas’ aggressive midfield defence.

The centre combination gives South Africa physical strength through Esterhuizen, with Moodie providing pace on the outside.

Erasmus has selected six forwards and two backs among the replacements. Pollard and Van den Berg provide the backline cover.

Springboks’ record against Argentina

South Africa has dominated the fixture across 40 Tests.

The Springboks have won 35 matches, while Argentina has won four. One Test ended in a draw.

South Africa also holds a 10-match winning record against Argentina in Buenos Aires.

Kaizer Chiefs captain Brandon Petersen says his side are determined to make up for lost time in the MTN8 after missing out on the competition for the past two seasons.

The Glamour Boys got their 2026-27 campaign off to a great start following their 3-1 win over newly promoted side Kruger United last weekend.

Amakhosi will now turn their attention to the MTN8 when they face Golden Arrows at the FNB Stadium on Sunday evening.

Petersen says his side are highly motivated to challenge for the trophy and believes the club belongs among the contenders every year.

“It has been a while since we have been in the MTN8 so obviously, I am very happy,” Petersen told his club’s official website.

“We missed out the past two seasons which is something that we don’t want to experience again and we are excited to be back in it.

“Kaizer Chiefs should be competing for this trophy every season and I think our absence has given us extra motivation to do well this time. We are looking to hit the ground running and hopefully go all the way.”
