Is Matome Mmolai the perfect replacement for Relebohile Mofokeng at Orlando Pirates? By Mazola Molefe.

Depending on who you speak to, midfielder Matome Mmolai could soon become a household name at Orlando Pirates – and the timing of his arrival could hardly be better following the departure of talisman Relebohile Mofokeng.

Unlike the Bafana Bafana international, however, Mmolai is not a product of the Pirates academy.

At 23, he arrives at Mayfair via the Motsepe Foundation Championship after impressing for Leicesterford City, making his rise all the more remarkable.

His agent, Basia Michaels of QT Sports, believes Pirates supporters have every reason to be excited.

“He can play at the highest level. No doubt about it. He has guts, he’s ballsy and plays like a man with nothing to lose.

That’s the sign of someone who plays without fear or trepidation. I pray the fans are kind to him because I believe he’ll become a superstar and a fan favourite very quickly,” she tells SoccerClub. Mmolai’s road to Pirates has been anything but conventional.

He returned to Leicesterford City in January 2026 after what he believed would be a move to Betway Premiership side TS Galaxy fell through.

The Rockets attempted to sign him on a free transfer before his club intervened and insisted the player return unless an agreement could be reached between the teams.

What initially looked like a major setback ultimately became the turning point in his career. Michaels watched it all unfold.

“I went to Dobsonville to watch a Leicesterford City game. It’s something I do often, but he’d just returned from TS Galaxy because of the registration issues. I watched him for less than 15 minutes and knew I wanted to manage him,” she explains.

“He was playing against Kruger United and completely bossed the midfield. At first, I didn’t even know who he was. I asked for a team sheet, saw his name and immediately started making calls.”

Those calls led Michaels to Mmolai’s uncle, Masilo, before she met the player’s mother and eventually the midfielder himself.

“After speaking to the family, he signed with QT Sports. From there a number of clubs reached.

I won’t name them all, but there was significant interest.” Michaels admits not everyone agreed with her decision to take Mmolai to Pirates.

“Some club owners told me I’d made a mistake and thrown him into the lions’ den. But that says everything about the player’s ability. As I continued watching him, it became clear he was ready for the next step,” Michaels elaborates.

According to Michaels, the man who now handles most of Pirates’ transfer dealings, Mpumi Khoza, soon made contact and negotiations gathered pace.

“The asking price was met for the new ‘President’,” she said, using the nickname Mofokeng was given while with the Soweto giants prior to his move to Belgium.

It turns out Mmolai also earned the same moniker in the lower divisions, which came because of the supposed authority Mmolai displayed in midfield during his time with Leicesterford City this past season.

Now the midfielder has the opportunity to prove that the faith shown in him was justified as Pirates usher in a new generation following Mofokeng’s departure.

NAIROBI, Kenya, August 11, 2026 – Hosting the 2029 World Athletics Championships will be a historic milestone for Kenya, motorsports queen Pauline Shegu believes.

Shegu says the effects of staging such a global showpiece would be felt for many generations to come, across all sectors of the Kenyan society.

“It would be a proud moment not only for Kenya but for the entire African continent to host this prestigious event. Africa has produced legendary athletes who have shaped the history of athletics, and the time is ripe for the world to experience the sport from its true powerhouse,” she said.

The veteran scribe’s comments comes a day after Kenya officially submitted its bid to host the competition, having expressed interest in doing so for the longest time.

If accepted, it would be the first time the championships is held in Africa — and Nairobi to be specific.

Shegu commended Athletics Kenya (AK) for the bold step, expressing confidence in the capital’s ability to stage a memorable championships.

“This is a bold and commendable step that reflects our nation’s growing capacity to host world-class sporting events. With Kenya’s breathtaking landscapes, rich cultural heritage, warm hospitality, and readily available sporting facilities, we have everything it takes to deliver a memorable championship experience,” she said.

She added that time is overripe for Kenya — as the cradle of middle and long distance athletics — to host the competition.

“As the home of some of the world’s greatest athletes, Kenya has consistently showcased excellence on the global stage. Our champions continue to inspire millions through their outstanding performances, proving that athletics is deeply woven into our national identity,” Shegu observed.

Kenya has previously bid to host the event — the 2025 edition — only to lose out to Tokyo.

Nairobi faces competition from London, Rome, and Munich for the 2029 edition.

The winning host cities for both the 2029 and 2031 championships will be announced by World Athletics after the Ultimate Championships in Budapest, Hungary next month.

Mamelodi Sundowns are in talks to secure a loan move for goalkeeper Jody February for the current campaign.

February has struggled for game time at Sundowns following his returning from a loan spell with AmaZulu.

According to his agent Mike Makaab, nothing has been finalised as yet, but there is a likelihood that February will leave Sundowns.

Having played second fiddle to both Ronwen Williams and Denis Onyango last term, the 30-year-old is eager to return to the pitch.

The return of Bafana Bafana second-choice goalkeeper Ricardo Goss to the club has moved February further down the pecking order.

Goss spent the two last seasons on loan at Siwelele FC, previously known as SuperSport United which is defunct.

And he is now set to challenge Williams for that No.1 spot under the tutelage of coach Miguel Cardoso at Sundowns.

SUNDOWNS TALKS TO SECURE FEBRUARY A MOVE

“Look for Ricardo Goss; we are looking at loan opportunities for him to get game-time and get back to the best form that we all know,” Makaab told FARPost.

“At the moment, nothing is final in terms of February’s future at Mamelodi Sundowns, as I said we are still looking at options for a loan move.”
