FIFA : Le Qatar en position de peser sur l’après-Infantino ? (Ahmed Bessol)
Le rapprochement entre Aleksander Ceferin et Nasser Al- Khelaïfi ne doit rien au hasard. Selon TalkSport, le président de l’UEFA souhaite convaincre le patron de l’Association européenne des clubs (ECA) de soutenir un boycott de la Coupe du monde des clubs 2029, compétition phare voulue par Gianni Infantino.
Cette initiative intervient alors que le président de la FIFA traverse l’une des périodes les plus délicates de son mandat. Il a été contraint de retirer son projet de création d’une société commerciale ouverte aux investisseurs privés et il fait face à une opposition grandissante de l’UEFA, de la Concacaf et de la Confédération asiatique de football (AFC), qui dénoncent sa gouvernance.
Dans ce contexte, le Qatar pourrait devenir l’un des acteurs clés de la séquence politique qui s’ouvre. Ceferin ne s’adresse pas seulement au président du PSG : il sollicite l’homme qui préside l’ECA et qui bénéficie du soutien de Doha, un État qui a patiemment construit son influence dans le football mondial grâce à une diplomatie sportive aussi efficace que discrète. Le poids du Qatar pourrait également s’exercer à travers l’Asie. Aussi, en rejoignant l’UEFA et la Concacaf pour contester le projet de Gianni Infantino, l’AFC a-t-elle envoyé un signal politique fort. Or, Doha entretient des relations privilégiées avec de nombreuses fédérations asiatiques et occupe une place influente au sein du football du continent.
Si la contestation devait s’élargir davantage, la capacité du Qatar à dialoguer aussi bien avec les dirigeants asiatiques qu’européens pourrait en faire un acteur incontournable dans la recherche d’un nouvel équilibre à la tête de la FIFA. Il ne lui restera plus qu’à convaincre la CAF et mettre un frein à la capacité de nuisance du Maroc. Ce qui est dans ses cordes.
L’ancien tandem Ceferin-Al-Khelaïfi avait déjà fait échouer le projet de Superligue. Aujourd’hui, leur rapprochement pourrait avoir une portée bien plus importante. Si la contestation contre Gianni Infantino continue de s’amplifier, le Qatar pourrait peser dans les discussions autour d’une nouvelle gouvernance de la FIFA, avec Nasser Al-Khelaïfi. Son nom revient désormais avec insistance parmi les personnalités capables de jouer un rôle majeur dans l’avenir du football mondial. Une piste à suivre.

‘We respect the opposition’: Johannesburg staying grounded in defence of netball crown
Fielding a new-look squad, Johannesburg are eager to hit the court when they open their campaign on Thursday, as they target their fifth successive title at the Spar National Netball Championships in Cape Town.
“We have a very young team – a lot of our senior players are not available due to injuries – but it’s exciting for us because we are building and grooming new players, and this is the best platform to do that,” Johannesburg head coach Elsje Jordaan said on Wednesday.
“We’re very excited. The senior A division is a beast of a league, and we all know that, but it’s a wonderful opportunity for young players to put up their hands and show what they’re worth.”
‘We’re not arrogant’
Despite dominating the tournament in recent years, Jordaan insisted her squad were not taking anything for granted, and they expected to face a battle in defence of their crown.
Johannesburg were one of eight district teams in the senior A section, which also included national sides from Botswana and Namibia, though the international squads would not be included in the points table and were not eligible for medals.
“We respect the opposition, and we turn up to be the best we can be, but we’re definitely not arrogant about it,” Jordaan said.
“Last year it was not smooth sailing. We had a few losses through the week and we had to dig deep, and that’s testament to our players, with the grit they showed, and they know what it takes.”
Msomi relying on the process
Former Proteas captain Bongi Msomi, the head coach of the Johannesburg U21 team, felt her team were also ready to defend their national age group title, but she said they were not getting ahead of themselves.
“We don’t come into this tournament with a full plan of winning. We’re just constantly working on the process, and if you get the process right you win,” said Msomi, who recently led the SA team as the chef de mission at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.
A total of 110 teams will compete at the week-long national championships at Stellenberg High School, across a range of divisions, in the senior and U21 age groups.
Beauden keen to show Yaqeen his speed
An advocate of the All Blacks’ renewed high-tempo style of play, Beauden Barrett is honoured to go head to head with rookie Stormers pivot Yaqeen Ahmed on Friday.
The 35-year-old Barrett will start at flyhalf in the Rugby’s Greatest Rivalry tour opener at Cape Town Stadium.
Fronting the media on Wednesday, the two-time World Rugby Player of the Year lauded debutant Ahmed, who grew up idolising him.
“With him and Sacha [Feinberg-Mngomezulu], the Stormers are in good hands going forward,” he said. “The success of the Springbok U20s in recent times has been superb.

“I feel honoured that he looked up to me,” Barrett added. “As All Blacks we’re always trying to do our best to inspire kids, not just in New Zealand.
“It’s pretty cool that we have a chance to go head to head and I’ll certainly make sure that I chat to him after the game because, yeah, he’s certainly the future.”
The former Hurricanes star will lean into his experience and previous tours of South Africa to help guide the All Blacks.

“I can recall playing at Newlands, it’s still in the top three stadiums for me,” he said. “Playing against Schalk Burger, Jean de Villiers, some great names.
“We’ve respectfully prepared around who we’re up against. The Stormers had a successful last season, making the URC semi-finals, so we’re aware of their threats.”
After being omitted from Dave Rennie’s first three matches in charge of the All Blacks, Barrett is eager to make an impact.
“It’s been a good chance to work on my game and freshen up. I’m excited to get out there with [scrumhalf] Cortez Ratima on Friday night against a quality team,” he said.

The 2015 World Cup winner added that the All Blacks’ unbeaten start under Rennie has been built on rediscovering their traditional attacking identity.
“What’s probably been evident is the speed and skill set that’s required to play the game that we want to. That’s been very positive for us.
“There’s been a good overflow from the success of the Super Rugby teams; it’s reasonably consistent with the way that Dave and [attack coach] Mike Blair want to play.
“It’s our DNA and how we like to play, how we arguably used to play, and there’s a nice free-flowing element to it,” he concluded.

Banque mondiale : de nouvelles infrastructures pour renforcer l'accès à l'eau potable à Tana
Le Projet d'Amélioration de l'Accès à l'Eau Potable (PAAEP), financé par le Groupe de la Banque mondiale, poursuit son déploiement à Antananarivo avec la mise en service de deux nouvelles Unités Compactes de Traitement (UCT) sur le site de Mandroseza. Opérationnelles depuis le 3 août, ces installations permettent d'injecter près de 4 500 m³ d'eau supplémentaires par jour dans le réseau de distribution de la JIRAMA.
Cette capacité additionnelle devrait améliorer progressivement l'alimentation en eau potable de plusieurs quartiers situés sur les hauteurs de la capitale, notamment à Ambohipo et dans les zones environnantes, régulièrement confrontés à des difficultés d'approvisionnement.
Ces nouvelles infrastructures s'ajoutent aux équipements déjà installés dans le cadre du PAAEP. Une première UCT mise en service à Mandroseza à la mi-mai produit déjà 24 000 m³ d'eau supplémentaires par jour. Début juillet, une autre unité est entrée en exploitation à Tanjombato. Au total, près de 30 000 m³ d'eau additionnels sont désormais injectés quotidiennement dans le réseau de la JIRAMA.
Au-delà de l'augmentation de la production, le projet prévoit également une modernisation des infrastructures de distribution. Les travaux en cours comprennent le remplacement de 63 kilomètres de conduites fuyardes, le renouvellement de 30 000 compteurs vétustes ainsi que la réalisation de 10 000 branchements promotionnels destinés à élargir l'accès des ménages au réseau public.
Selon les responsables du projet, ces investissements permettront de réduire les pertes d'eau, d'améliorer la qualité du service et de renforcer durablement l'approvisionnement de la capitale face à une demande en constante progression.
Le PAAEP ne se limite pas à Antananarivo. Soutenu par la Banque mondiale, le programme sera également déployé dans plusieurs villes du pays. Des travaux sont prêts à démarrer à Mananjary, Antsirabe, Mahajanga, Fianarantsoa et Manakara afin d'étendre l'accès à des services d'eau potable plus fiables.
À travers ce projet, la Banque mondiale accompagne Madagascar dans la modernisation de ses infrastructures hydrauliques et le renforcement des capacités du secteur. L'objectif est d'améliorer durablement l'accès à l'eau potable pour des milliers de ménages, aussi bien dans la capitale que dans les principaux centres urbains du pays.

New era begins for Wallabies
New Wallabies coach Les Kiss has rewarded prop Aidan Ross and lock Miles Amatosero with their first Test starts for Saturday’s clash against Japan in Osaka.
The pair are the headline selections in Kiss’ first match 23, with Ross earning his fourth Test cap and Amatosero his second after making his debut against Italy.
Ross packs down alongside Reds teammate Josh Nasser, who returns from concussion, and veteran tighthead Allan Alaalatoa in an experienced front row.
Amatosero joins Josh Canham in the second row after the latter made history by becoming the first Wallabies lock to score a hat-trick of tries in Australia’s last outing.
The only other change to the starting XV sees Hunter Paisami return at inside centre, where he partners Joseph Suaalii in midfield.
Harry Wilson captains an unchanged loose trio featuring Rob Valetini and Fraser McReight, while Ryan Lonergan and Declan Meredith continue their halfback partnership for a third successive Test.
Billy Pollard, Angus Bell and Taniela Tupou provide plenty of firepower off the bench, while Charlie Cale returns to the Wallabies squad for the first time since 2024.
There could also be a debut for Isaac Henry, who has been named among the replacements and would become Wallaby No 999 if he takes the field.

“Every single player in the squad has pushed hard over the last fortnight to get us to this point, making selecting the matchday 23 a real challenge for the coaches,” said Kiss.
“The players selected now have the privilege and responsibility that comes with wearing the gold jersey and we know they’ll do everything they can to earn the support of all Australians when they take to the field in Osaka on Saturday night.”
