Groom: Yaqeen’s rise was years in the making
Junior Bok flyhalf Yaqeen Ahmed may look like an overnight success, but those who have worked closely with him say his rise has been years in the making. tbzikra.org
Former Stormers scrumhalf Nic Groom, who coached Ahmed at Wynberg Boys’ High, says the talented playmaker was already destined for bigger things before injuries and circumstances pushed him out of the spotlight.
“He seems to have flown under the radar this last year and there are a couple of reasons for that,” Groom told News24.
WESSELS: Junior Boks follow Bok lead
Ahmed, who’s about to turn 20, starred at flyhalf as South Africa retained the Junior World Championship title after stepping into the No 10 jersey following Vusi Moyo’s call-up to the senior Springbok squad.
His performances have since earned him a place at the Springboks’ alignment camp and a start for SA A against Zimbabwe.
According to Groom, however, Ahmed’s breakthrough could have come much sooner.
“Yaqeen was 19 in matric last year, which meant he couldn’t play Craven Week and he was injured for bits and pieces of the year,” he explained.
Groom added that Ahmed was already in contention for the Junior Bok squad last season but, together with coach Kevin Foote and SA Rugby’s general manager of high performance Dave Wessels, made the decision to prioritise his schooling over the Junior World Championship.
“I know he was part of the SA Under-20 squad when he was in matric, but Kevin and Dave Wessels, along with Yaqeen, made the decision they wouldn’t take him to the World Cup so he could focus on his studies.

“They made that call and it was the right one; I’ve got massive amounts of respect to those coaches for doing that.”

Kenya: ouverture du procès de six accusés présumés pour la mort en détention du militant Albert Ojwang
C’est un procès très suivi au Kenya qui s’est ouvert lundi 20 et mardi 21 juillet 2026 à la Haute Cour de Kibera, à Nairobi. Celui d’Albert Ojwang, un jeune Kényan de 31 ans décédé dans sa cellule dans la nuit des 7 et 8 juin 2025. Il avait été arrêté après avoir publié des messages accusant le numéro deux de la police de corruption. Son décès avait provoqué la colère dans le pays et entraîné plusieurs journées de manifestations. Six personnes sont aujourd’hui accusées de son meurtre, dont trois policiers. Tous ont plaidé non coupable et leur procès vient officiellement de commencer.
Kaizer Chiefs transfer shake up: 3 signings and 5 goodbyes
Kaizer Chiefs have now made eight transfer decisions ahead of the new Betway Premiership season. They confirmed the signing of Adolf Tasingwa from Azam FC and sending goalkeeper Fiacre Ntwari on loan to AmaZulu FC.
The Glamour Boys have strengthened Fernando Da Cruz’s squad with three new arrivals. The additions have beefed up goalkeeping, central defence and central midfield.
ADOLF TASINGWA LEADS NEW ARRIVALS
Kaizer Chiefs have made the following signings during the current transfer window:
- Thabo Moloisane, central defender from Stellenbosch FC.
- Renaldo Leaner, goalkeeper from Sekhukhune United
- Adolf Tasingwa, defensive midfielder from Azam FC (Tanzania)
Tasingwa also becomes the first player from Tanzania to represent Amakhosi, bringing experience after previous spells in Iceland, Norway and Finland.
KAIZER CHIEFS PART WAYS WITH FIVE PLAYERS
At the same time, Amakhosi have trimmed the squad by releasing four players and allowing Ntwari to leave on loan. The standout exit is Aden McCarthy who was one of the best players in Soweto last season. The 21-year-old left-center back stepped into greener pastures with a move to Europe.
The departures are:
- George Matlou – joined Stellenbosch FC
- Tashreeq Morris – joined Durban City FC
- Happy Mashiane – currently without a club
- Aden McCarthy – joined Sabah SK
- Fiacre Ntwari – loaned to Kruger United.
With three arrivals and five departures already confirmed, Kaizer Chiefs have made eight major transfer decisions as preparations continue for the new Betway Premiership season.
In the meantime, the Glamour Boys are hotly linked with Stellenbosch FC superstar winger Langelihle Phili. The club is also expected to sign an attacking midfielder. Perhaps a left-back is also needed after Paseka Mako’s fractured arm in Spain.
