How KCB Scholars programme is forging Kenya’s next generation of champions
Kenya’s celebrated athletics tradition could be witnessing the emergence of a new generation of champions, with young athletes increasingly making their mark at regional and continental competitions. For a group of KCB Scholars, the past few weeks have provided a glimpse into the potential of Kenya’s next crop of sporting stars, with impressive performances at the Federation of East Africa Secondary School Sports Association (FEASSA) Games and the Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa (ANOCA) Zone V Games.
These performances matter not only for the medals won but also for what they represent for developing young talent. From the school track to regional competition and, potentially, the Youth Olympic Games, the athletes are beginning to navigate a pathway that could shape their sporting careers.
At the 2026 FEASSA Games, held in Morogoro, Tanzania, between 14 and 25 August, four KCB Scholars competed in athletics, participating across sprint and field events. Their performances produced a strong medal haul, with Charles Griffins winning gold in the 200m and Anthony Lemoshira claiming silver in the 100m. Valerian Ombasa secured bronze in the 400m, while Maurice Odongo won gold in the shot put. tbzikra.org
The scholars also played a key role in the 4x100m relay, with both Lemoshira and Griffins earning gold medals as part of the victorious Kenyan team.
The FEASSA success extended beyond athletics. KCB Foundation was represented by nine scholars from three partner schools in volleyball. Kesogon Mixed Secondary School, which had five scholars in the competition, won gold, while Kwanthanze High School, represented by two scholars, secured silver. Two scholars from Soweto Secondary School helped their team reach the semi-finals.
For the young athletes, however, the opportunity to compete on the regional stage was quickly followed by another important test at home. The ANOCA Zone V Games, held at Kenyatta University from August 24 to 28, brought together more than 300 young athletes from 11 African countries, including Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Tanzania, Ethiopia, Burundi, Sudan, South Sudan, Somalia, Egypt, and Eritrea.
The competition provided an important platform for young athletes to test themselves against peers from across the region and served as a preparation benchmark for the Youth Olympic Games scheduled to take place in Dakar, Senegal, from 31 October to 13 November 2026.
Two KCB Scholars earned places on the Kenyan team, and both delivered gold-medal performances. Lemoshira, who had won silver in the 100m at FEASSA, stepped up his performance to claim gold in the same event at the ANOCA Zone V Games. In the 200m, Bramwel Chasala also struck gold, adding another significant achievement to the growing list of successes by KCB Scholars.
For Chasala, the achievement is a reflection of what young athletes can accomplish when talent is matched with opportunity. He notes: “Winning gold for Kenya has given me confidence that I can compete at a higher level. It motivates me to keep training, stay disciplined and continue improving because I know there are bigger opportunities ahead.”
His success, alongside that of Lemoshira and the other KCB Scholars, illustrates the importance of nurturing sporting talent while young athletes are still in school. The journey to elite sport does not begin at the Olympics or world championships. It starts much earlier in school fields, local competitions and regional championships where young athletes first learn to compete, win and, equally importantly, learn from defeat.
For KCB Foundation, supporting this journey is about creating opportunities for young people to discover and develop their potential while maintaining their education.
“Talent is only the beginning. Our responsibility is to create opportunities for young people to develop their abilities, compete with confidence and pursue their ambitions while also investing in their education. The achievements of our scholars demonstrate what is possible when young talent receives the right support and opportunities,” said KCB Foundation Managing Director Mendi Njonjo.
The recent performances also offer an encouraging indicator for Kenya’s broader athletics pipeline. With two KCB Scholars already winning gold at the ANOCA Zone V Games, and the Dakar Youth Olympic Games approaching, the young athletes have an opportunity to take their development to another level.
For a country whose athletics success has inspired generations, the emergence of these young competitors provides reason for optimism. Their journey is still at its early stages, but the performances in Morogoro and Nairobi suggest that Kenya’s next generation of champions is already beginning to announce itself.

Duje Caleta-Car quitte l’OL et rejoint Sassuolo
C’est désormais officiel : Duje Caleta-Car n’est plus un joueur de l’Olympique Lyonnais. Le défenseur croate de 29 ans a trouvé un accord avec le club rhodanien pour mettre fin prématurément à son contrat, qui courait encore jusqu’en juin 2027. Libre de tout engagement, il s’est dans la foulée engagé avec Sassuolo, où il va poursuivre sa carrière en Serie A.
Arrivé à Lyon en 2023 sous la forme d’un prêt en provenance de Southampton avant d’être définitivement recruté un an plus tard, Caleta-Car aura disputé 57 rencontres toutes compétitions confondues avec l’OL, pour un but et une passe décisive. Son passage dans le Rhône aura notamment été marqué par une finale de Coupe de France en 2024 et le retour du club sur la scène européenne. Prêté à la Real Sociedad la saison dernière, le Croate y a retrouvé du temps de jeu avec 27 apparitions, mais son retour à Lyon n’aura pas permis de relancer son aventure.
Une dernière année de contrat abandonnée
Pas dans les plans de Paulo Fonseca depuis le début de l’exercice 2026-2027, le défenseur a donc choisi de tourner la page. Cette résiliation à l’amiable permet également à l’OL de se délester d’un salaire conséquent, estimé à environ 250 000 euros mensuels. De son côté, Caleta-Car peut désormais relever un nouveau défi en Italie, avec Sassuolo, qui a officialisé son arrivée en tant que joueur libre.
International croate à 38 reprises pour un but, Caleta-Car va découvrir un nouvel environnement en Serie A et retrouver un visage bien connu dans le vestiaire des Neroverdi : Nemanja Matic, son ancien coéquipier. Après trois saisons entre Lyon, la Real Sociedad et désormais l’Italie, le défenseur de 29 ans ouvre ainsi un nouveau chapitre de sa carrière, avec l’ambition de retrouver une place importante sur le terrain.

Roc Nation Sports International Launches ‘Dream To Play’ Youth Sports Clinic
Roc Nation Sports International (RNSI) is proud to announce the launch of the RNSI Dream to Play sports clinic series, a global, year-round grassroots community initiative harnessing the power of sport to inspire young people, create opportunities and encourage the next generation to dream bigger.
South Africa will host the first in the series of youth clinics, which will kick off at the end of September with an inaugural football clinic in Nyanga, Cape Town.
“Roc Nation Sports International has always given back to the communities in which we work, so now we are taking it to another level with our Dream to Play clinics,” stated Michael Yormark, president of RNSI.
“We are proud to launch this new initiative in South Africa before running future clinics in our other global markets, which will inspire young men and women around the world via the power of sport.”
Bringing together up to 100 young local participants, the first half-day football clinic in Cape Town will offer structured technical skills work led by professional coaches from Nkala FTBL, alongside position-specific coaching, Q&A sessions and mentorship.
The Dream to Play series will be supported by a group of South African and global commercial partners that share RNSI’s commitment to creating meaningful opportunities for young people through sport. The inaugural partners will be announced in the coming weeks.
“Dream to Play is rooted in creating tangible pathways and giving young talent the belief that their ambitions are valid and achievable,” said Grant Veitch, RNSI Director of African Football Recruitment.
“Starting in Nyanga with football allows us to connect directly with the community by developing a memorable experience that extends far beyond the pitch. This is the first step in a broader vision to nurture youth potential right across South Africa, and these clinics undoubtedly showcase the commitment of RNSI to give back to local communities in a meaningful way.”
Crucially, Dream to Play is designed as a sustainable, year-round roadshow in South Africa rather than a single event. Operating on a quarterly schedule (every three to four months), the campaign will alternate between three of South Africa’s popular sports verticals: football, rugby and basketball.
Following September’s football launch, RNSI will host a rugby clinic at the end of the year, followed by a basketball clinic in the first part of 2027, continuously rotating across carefully selected venues nationwide.
Lwazi Mlonyeni, who will be the lead coach at the clinic, said it would be a great honour for Nkala FTBL to be involved in the first ‘Dream to Play’ activation.
“We are so excited to work with Roc Nation Sports International and the youngsters in Nyanga to lend a helping hand in the community and to start off this great initiative. This is such a special opportunity for the youngsters involved, and we cannot wait to get started.”
