‘Clean sheets is the goal,’- New Naibois signing outlines targets after departing Shabana
NAIROBI, Kenya, July 22, 2026 – New Nairobi United signing Wyclife Awiko believes his addition will tighten the backline and enhance the team’s trophy ambitions next season.
Awiko has promised to lay his life on the line to ensure as many cleansheets as possible as Naibois seek success on all fronts.
“Our biggest achievement in the coming season would be to win the league (FKF Premier League)…the Mozzart Bet Cup (FKF Cup). As a defender, the main goal is to ensure that we keep as many clean sheets as possible,” the towering centre back said.
Awiko was unveiled as Nairobi United’s latest signing at the beginning of the week, joining from Shabana for who he has been a rock at the back in the 2025/26 season.
The Kassagam Secondary School alumnus says he was enamoured by the vision presented to him by head coach Patrick Aussems, leaving no doubt in his mind about joining the Johnson Sakaja-owned side.
“It is a big team that has even played continental football. My hope is that we will keep soaring high. I signed because it is a good team that is going places…and I believe that my future is secure here. I know I will succeed here and even get better,” the left-footed centre back explained.
His addition to Naibois continues what has been a spending spree by the capital side, which will be playing in the topflight for the second straight season.
Other than bolstering the backline, Awiko will also be a portent aerial threat for his new employers, especially from set-pieces.
Apart from Awiko, Aussems has strengthened his defence with the capture of Harambee Stars custodian Farouk Shikhalo — formerly of Ethiopian giants St Georges.
They have also snapped up for KCB right-back Kevin ‘Chumsy’ Okumu as well as ex-Migori Youth dangerman Syphas Owuor.

Sharks start ‘incredibly physical’ former Stormer
Coach Mike Vowles has made one enforced change to the Sharks XV starting lineup for Friday’s Currie Cup clash against the Cheetahs in Bloemfontein.
Danio Botha replaces Jannes Potgieter, who suffered a knee injury early in last week’s 26-24 win against the Pumas in Nelspruit, at blindside flank.
Botha, whose primary postion is lock, featured for UCT in the Varsity Cup and Western Province in the SA Rugby U21 Cup last year.
The only other change sees Bryce Calvert replace Jacques Marais as the reserve hooker.
“We haven’t made many changes, we feel that the more the team plays together, the better we’re going to get,” Vowles said.
“We’ve brought in Danio, who joined us from the Stormers. He played his age-group rugby down there and we see him as a player with massive potential.
“He’s incredibly physical and, given some time in our system, I think he’s going to be really good for us and someone to watch.”

Vowles expects a stern test from the Cheetahs, who edged the Lions 29-27 at the Free State Stadium last week.
“They’re a settled team who have played a lot of rugby together, they have some experienced players in their group and we anticipate a physical battle from them.
“But having seen what our group can do, I have no doubt we’ll be able to match them physically.”
SHARKS XV – 15 Chijindu Okonta, 14 Christie Grobbelaar, 13 Marnus Potgieter, 12 Janco Purchase, 11 Lyle Matthews, 10 Tim Swiel, 9 Ross Braude, 8 Thomas Dyer (c), 7 Danio Botha, 6 Willem van den Hever, 5 Deon Slabbert, 4 Johan Momsen, 3 Simphiwe Ngobese, 2 Kerron van Vuuren, 1 Cameron Dawson.
