Kaizer Chiefs offer Stellenbosch FC two players and cash

GIVEN MSIMANGO INCLUDED IN KAIZER CHIEFS AND STELLENBOSCH FC SWAP DEAL

Mazola Molefe reported: “SABC Sport has established that defender Given Msimango is one of two players Kaizer Chiefs have offered, together with a cash payment, to Stellenbosch FC in an effort to secure the signing of highly rated winger Langelihle Phili.”

Msimango joined Kaizer Chiefs from TS Galaxy in 2023. He signed a four-year contract and quickly became a regular starter. The centre-back impressed in his first season. He also became one of the leaders in the backline.

His progress was later interrupted by a long-term injury. New defensive partnerships also reduced his playing time. The 28-year-old from Brakpan, Gauteng, fought his way back into the team. He started nine of Amakhosi’s final 10 matches last season.

Despite that, the club is now willing to include him in the deal for Phili.

ASHLEY DU PREEZ LEAVING SOWETO

Du Preez is the second player included in the proposal. The forward joined Kaizer Chiefs from Stellenbosch FC in July 2022. The reported transfer fee was R10 million.

He enjoyed some memorable moments at Naturena. He scored twice in the Soweto Derby and provided the winning assist in the 2025 Nedbank Cup final.

However, injuries and inconsistent form affected his progress. The 28-year-old, known as “Slosh” in Stellenbosch, made only 13 appearances in all competitions during the 2025/26 season. He failed to score a goal.

Reports suggest Du Preez has already agreed personal terms with his hometown club Stellenbosch FC.

If the clubs agree on a deal, Kaizer Chiefs will secure Langelihle Phili. Stellenbosch FC would receive Given Msimango, Ashley du Preez, and a cash payment in return.

Kaizer Chiefs head coach Fernando Da Cruz has reassured supporters he does want to win trophies this season, but says he will take it step by step, starting with Saturday’s Betway Premiership opener away to Kruger United.

Chiefs will go for trophies, but…

Da Cruz said last week at Naturena that Chiefs would be going for every trophy on offer this season. Amakhosi will play in the Caf Confederation Cup as well as all the top flight domestic competitions.

After Chiefs’ Toyota Cup win over Scottland FC on the weekend, however, Amakhosi’s new head coach appeared to backtrack slightly.

Da Cruz told reporters in Phokeng that he did not think his current squad could challenge Pirates and Sundowns for the Premiership title. He did, however, give the added caveat that he would reassess that opinion after Chiefs had brought in several new attacking signings.

This week at the Betway Premiership launch, meanwhile, Da Cruz again appeared optimistic, albeit with a note of caution.

“Our mission is to win trophies,” he said.

“We are a big club, with a big history, a lot of fans and a lot of ambitions. But the first step is to start very well in the championship and after that we will take it step by step and make it our ambition to win trophies.”

One of Chiefs’ new attacking signings does seem set to be Langelihle Phili. Negotiations were reported to be continuing yesterday between Stellenbosch and Chiefs.

“You don’t want to lose the player, he is one of the hottest properties in South Africa,” said Stellies coach Gavin Hunt this week.

“But there are contractual circumstances that come into play. There has been a lot of media speculation and I am sure in the next day or two we will hear some more.”

Da Cruz, meanwhile, has been talking about bringing in versatile forwards who can play in more than one position. And in that sense, Phili certainly fits the bill.

‘I like players who can play in different positions’

“In modern football I like players who can play in different positions,” said Da Cruz.

“PSG have that, players who can play in different positions. I prefer to speak about player profiles than player positions.”

Ngah Manga struck twice as Cameroon claimed a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Mali in an entertaining TotalEnergies CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON 2026) Group D encounter in Casablanca on Thursday evening.

The Indomitable Lionesses maintained their impressive record against Mali, extending it to four wins and a draw in their previous five meetings, while securing an important three points ahead of a decisive second group outing.

Meeting for a sixth time in tournament history, the familiar rivals once again produced a tightly contested affair that swung both ways in a high-octane clash.

Cameroon opened the scoring through Manga in the 14^th minute through Galatasary star, Ngah Manga, who showed excellent composure to bring down a lofted pass into space with her chest before calmly finishing at the near post to hand her side an early advantage.

Mali responded positively and were rewarded in the 30th minute after goalkeeper Michaely Bihina brought down Aïssata Traoré while attempting to gather a through ball inside the area. Traoré stepped up confidently and converted from the penalty spot to bring the West Africans level in the 30^th minute.

The remainder of the first half was evenly balanced, with both teams creating promising openings but unable to find a way through well-organised defences.

The contest resumed with the same highly paced momentum in the second stanza.

Cameroon regained the lead in the 72nd minute after a VAR review resulted in another penalty as Ngah Manga stepped up to convert with composure and complete the brace and subsequently restore her side’s advantage.

Mali pushed forward in search of another equaliser, while Cameroon defended resolutely as the match entered its closing stages.

The best chance of the dying moments fell to Mali substitute Fatoumata Diarra, who latched onto an inviting delivery in the final seconds, but her effort lacked the power to trouble Bihina, who gathered comfortably to preserve Cameroon’s victory.

The result marks another successful chapter for Cameroon in a fixture they have historically dominated.

The Indomitable Lionesses are appearing at the TotalEnergies CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations for the 13th time, having featured in every edition since 1998 except the previous tournament.

Attention now turns to Sunday’s second round of Group D fixtures, where Cameroon face Ghana in what promises to be another stern examination following the Black Queens’ opening victory over Cape Verde. Mali will be looking to bounce back when they take on Cape Verde, with both sides seeking valuable points in the race for a place in the knockout stages.
