‘Leinster need plan for Luan’
Irish Times sports writer John O’Sullivan has warned Leinster of the threat posed by Bulls-bound Sharks fullback Luan Giliomee at Kings Park on Saturday.
The 20-year-old starred with two tries in the Sharks’ 41-24 opening-round victory against the Ospreys in Durban and will look to make another big impression against the understrength URC champions. milkshakeslot.online
Writing for The Irish Times, O’Sullivan described Giliomee’s performance as the latest evidence of a “precocious talent”, adding: “The Irish province [Leinster] is forewarned. Forearmed? That’s to be determined.”
Giliomee’s first try against the Ospreys particularly caught O’Sullivan’s eye.
“It highlighted the essential attributes of timing, acceleration, footwork, balance and peripheral vision,” he wrote. “It was a composite of excellence.”
MONGALO: ‘It’s not Joey vs Jacques, godfather of defence’
The former Junior Bok’s size, versatility and attacking ability also prompted the Irishman to draw comparisons with two of the Springboks’ most dangerous backs.
“Giliomee is 175cm tall, weighs 81kg, and can play scrumhalf, outhalf [flyhalf] and fullback,” he wrote. “Think Cheslin Kolbe or Kurt-Lee Arendse.
“It’s in the 15 jersey that he’s got the chance to shine in the URC, last weekend being a case in point.”
O’Sullivan also highlighted the prospect of Giliomee coming up against Leinster’s 20-year-old fullback Todd Lawlor, who made his debut in last week’s 27-26 defeat to the Lions at Ellis Park.

“The son of former Irish international Phil certainly took the chance presented to him, running for more metres (144) and beating six defenders in an eye-catching display,” he wrote.
“Lawlor showed great composure and confidence, particularly in the way he took on the Lions’ chasing line and ran back kicks, often beating multiple opponents.”

Ackerman’s long wait finally pays off
Marques Ackerman’s remarkable run for South Africa A has earned him a maiden Test call-up at 30.
Ackerman has spent years making runs in domestic cricket. Now, at 30, he has an opportunity to prove he belongs at the highest level.
The Dolphins batter was the only uncapped player included in South Africa’s 18-man preliminary squad for the first Test against Australia, beginning at Kingsmead on 9 October. But his selection is about far more than one impressive domestic season.
Ackerman has amassed more than 1,000 runs in his past 10 red-ball appearances for South Africa A, averaging a remarkable 82.92. That run includes four centuries and a career-best 256 against Bangladesh A in August.

Those are figures that are difficult to ignore, particularly for a Proteas side preparing to defend its World Test Championship title.
Yet the most encouraging aspect of Ackerman’s selection is that his performances have been rewarded despite the competition for places in South Africa’s batting order.
David Bedingham, Ryan Rickelton, Tristan Stubbs and Tony de Zorzi are all included in the preliminary squad, leaving Ackerman with plenty to do if he is to make his Test debut.
His leadership credentials could also work in his favour.
Ackerman has captained South Africa A and led from the front with the bat, qualities that have clearly impressed head coach Shukri Conrad.
Conrad specifically highlighted the batter’s leadership and performances when explaining his inclusion in the squad.

The next challenge is turning a deserved opportunity into a place in the final 15, and potentially the starting XI.
South Africa assemble in Durban on Thursday for a training camp that includes a two-day intra-squad match and scenario-based sessions before Conrad settles on his final squad.
For Ackerman, it represents an opportunity to demonstrate that his prolific form can translate into runs against one of the world’s strongest Test attacks.
And for South African domestic cricket, his selection sends an encouraging message: consistent performances can still open the door to the Proteas, even when a player has passed 30.
The runs have earned Ackerman his opportunity. Now comes the challenge of making it count.

Fello Star, nouveau leader !
L’homme providentiel s’appelle Youssouf Camara.

Kaizer Chiefs youth prospect going right to the top
Kaizer Chiefs Diski Challenge coach Vela Khumalo expects COSAFA U20 star Steven Mendes to make the jump to the first team sooner rather than later.
Khumalo backs Mendes for the Kaizer Chiefs senior side
Chiefs Diski Challenge coach Vela Khumalo believes 18-year-old sensation Steven Mendes already possesses the maturity and raw ability to represent the Chiefs first team. Mendes won the Golden Boot at the recent COSAFA U20 tournament in Maputo, Mozambique. Mendes, nomimally a midfielder, was converted into a striker for the event.
“I think I must just take the opportunity to congratulate our under-20s for qualifying for AFCON,” Khumalo told iDiski Times.
“With the Mendes story, everybody’s talking about that. These are the five players that were part of our DDC. He’s a special player, a top player. He’s going to make it big. The boy has grown in stature and is very talented.”
“It’s just a matter of time. He will also be knocking or being identified by the coaches to remain in the first team, in and out, train with the first team and all of that. But he’s a special player. He’s a talented player. This is good for our team.”
Latest injury news from Naturena
First-choice goalkeeper Brandon Petersen will miss up to six weeks with a knee injury he sustained in training. Meanwhile, versatile attacker Wandile Duba will miss a few weeks with a hip and groin issue. New Chiefs signing Lebohang Maboe was forced off during the second half of their 0-0 stalemate with Golden Arrows. The severity of his injury is unclear, but it’s a blow for both club and player, who pulled out of the Bafana squad to face Guinea and Eritrea. The 32-year-old playmaker has two goals and two assists from seven Betway Premiership outings this term. Talented attacker Langelihle Phili is also out long-term with an ankle problem. Left-backs Paseka Mako and Khanyiso Shinga, as well as striker Khanyisa Mayo, are also sidelined.
When is the next Kaizer Chiefs match?
We’re in the middle of a long international break, and Chiefs fans still have more time to wait. The Glamour Boys’ next league assignment is at home to Stellenbosch on Saturday, 17 October at 15:30.
