Monaco arrache le nul face au Cercle Bruges en match amical
L’AS Monaco poursuit sa montée en puissance durant cette préparation estivale. Opposés au Cercle Bruges ce vendredi dans une rencontre amicale disputée sur un format inhabituel de 120 minutes, les Monégasques ont dû se contenter d’un match nul (2-2), après avoir longtemps couru derrière le score.
Les Belges ont frappé les premiers grâce à Ngoura, auteur de l’ouverture du score dès la 16e minute. Plus réalistes, ils ont ensuite creusé l’écart juste avant la pause par l’intermédiaire de Konaté (39e), mettant les hommes d’Adi Hütter dans une situation délicate.
Monaco a toutefois rapidement réagi. Quelques minutes après le deuxième but adverse, Aleksandr Golovin a réduit l’écart (43e), relançant complètement les débats avant le retour aux vestiaires. Rennie shares ‘successful’ All Blacks tour tips
All Blacks head coach Dave Rennie is excited to kick off the Rugby’s Greatest Rivalry series in Cape Town and against the Stormers, after a sitdown with “the Incomparables”.
The All Blacks have arrived in the Republic for seven matches of the tour, running from 7 August to 12 September, against the Stormers, Sharks, Vodacom Bulls and Lions, and three Tests against the Springboks, before a fourth Test in the US.
Speaking on Friday pitchside at a Cape Town Stadium full of supporters, with the New Zealand squad present for a “Welcome to Country” event, Rennie reflected on time with members of the Class of ’96, the last All Blacks side to tour and win a series in South Africa.

“It was pretty special. We had an evening where a few of them came to share their stories,” he said. “There were a lot of laughs and a lot of critical information, but a good chance for our boys to interact with the team that’s travelled here and been successful.
“It’s been a long time so it was fantastic for those guys to come and speak to us.”
Tasked with prepping the All Blacks to also try and topple the Boks at the Rugby World Cup next year, Rennie explained how this tour format differs from a tournament.
“It’s completely different to a World Cup,” he said. “We were playing the same team four times, so your review ends up being your preview.
“Hopefully you learn a bit and do things better next game. Also, playing the provincial sides, it’s great for the whole squad.”

Turning to next Friday’s opening fixture, Rennie was wary of a dangerous Stormers side.
“The Stormers have got a great reputation. They had a pretty strong season in the URC. They got away to a really good start.
“I think we’re well aware of all the South African sides. They’ve all got a lot of big men, they play a great brand of footy. Playing in this great stadium, we’re really excited about it.”
The All Blacks boss also confirmed his 44-man squad has arrived in full, barring captain Ardie Savea, who will link up with the group after the Sharks clash on 11 August, ahead of the 22 August Test at Ellis Park.
“Everyone’s here except for Ardie, the last group arrived this morning. Ardie arrives just after the Sharks game. He’ll definitely be available.
“Ardie’s had a massive workload. He’s been playing and training since January 2025, so it’s been about 18 months of top level footy. We just wanted him to take some time out.”

Rennie also touched on the confidence gained from three straight wins in the Nations Championship, his first matches in charge.
“We’re building; we’ve got a lot of new staff and quite a lot of new young players. We’re learning a lot.
“Ireland was a good performance for us, but we’re well aware of how tough this challenge is, double world champions. Rassie [Erasmus] has done a phenomenal job here.”
He was equally taken by the passionate reception from over a hundred Capetonians at Friday’s event.
“It’s incredible. I know our players often talk about the support that all the Super Rugby teams used to get here, and the All Blacks get here. It’s awesome to start our campaign in Cape Town.”

Proteas bounce back to defeat Uganda in 62-54 derby thriller and secure 5th place
GLASGOW — Team South Africa brought a turbulent Commonwealth Games campaign to a triumphant close on Friday afternoon, rallying from a first-quarter deficit to defeat African rivals Uganda 62-54 in the 5th-place classification match at The Hydro.
Less than 24 hours after their heartbreaking 58-54 defeat to England dashed medal hopes, Jenny van Dyk’s squad demonstrated admirable resilience. Having opened pool play with dominant wins over Malawi, Tonga, and Northern Ireland before pushing Australia and England to the limit, the Proteas dug deep when tested by an energized She-Cranes side to confirm their status as Africa’s top netball nation in Glasgow.
She-Cranes Blitz Early, Proteas Respond in Second Quarter
Uganda caught South Africa off-guard in the opening 15 minutes. Powered by height in the circle through star Goal Shooter Mary Cholhok (34 goals) and sharp shooting from Shadiah Nassanga (20 goals), the She-Cranes exploited early South African defensive gaps to surge into a surprising 17-12 lead at the first interval.
The turnaround came swiftly in the second quarter. Coach Van Dyk made a crucial tactical adjustment, introducing Tarle Nikkita Mathe at Centre to partner Wing Attack Khanyisa Elaine Chawane. The move injected pace and stability into the midcourt, allowing South Africa to turn defence into swift transition. A ruthless 20-11 second-quarter performance turned a five-goal deficit into a 32-28 halftime lead that the Proteas would never relinquish.

Van der Berg Masterclass Seals Victory
The star of the show was once again Elmeré van der Berg. The towering Goal Shooter delivered a near-perfect shooting masterclass, netting 48 goals from 49 attempts (98%). She received exceptional service from Chawane, who delivered a game-high 31 goal assists and 41 feeds into the circle, and Goal Attack Kamogelo Maseko, who contributed 14 goals (88%) alongside 16 goal assists.
On the defensive end, Nicola Smith and Sanmarie Louise Visser worked tirelessly over the full 60 minutes to combat Uganda’s aerial threat. Smith anchored the circle with three interceptions and three deflections, gradually starving Cholhok of clean supply in the third and fourth quarters as South Africa extended their lead to 48-41 before managing the final period to complete the 62-54 victory.
Looking Ahead: Pride and Promise for the Proteas
Finishing 5th in Glasgow may fall short of the medal podium the Proteas targeted, but the campaign highlighted the immense growth and potential under Van Dyk’s guidance.
With high-margin victories early on, toe-to-toe battles against world heavyweights Australia and England, and a gritty derby victory to close out the tournament, South Africa departs Scotland with heads held high, and a firm foundation established for the international cycles ahead.

WAFCON 2026: Morocco overcome Algeria in tense North African derby
Hosts Morocco strengthened their position in Group A of the TotalEnergies CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON 2026) with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Algeria in a tense Maghreb derby on Thursday night.
Sanaa Mssoudy scored the only goal of the match in the 84th minute as the Atlas Lionesses found a late breakthrough against a disciplined Algerian side.
Both teams had gone into the fixture with opening victories, Morocco having beaten Kenya 4-0 while Algeria defeated Senegal 2-0, making this one of the most important early matches in the group.
The result means Morocco have now taken six points from their first two matches and are in a strong position in the race for the quarter-finals.
For Algeria, it was a painful defeat after a compact and organised display that kept the hosts frustrated for long periods.
Derby begins with caution
The first half reflected the importance of the match.
Morocco had home support behind them, but Algeria were determined not to allow the hosts to settle into an easy rhythm.
The match was physical and tactical, with both sides aware that a victory would place them in a commanding position in Group A.
Algeria’s approach was built around defensive organisation, collective effort and patience, just as coach Farid Benstiti had suggested before the match.
Morocco, meanwhile, tried to take control in midfield and use their technical quality to open spaces, but clear chances were limited.
The intensity of the contest was clear in the number of stoppages and bookings, with Algeria’s Ikram Adjabi and Ines Belloumou cautioned in the first half, while Morocco’s Hanane Ait El Haj was also shown a yellow card.
The first half ended goalless, leaving the derby finely balanced.
Morocco push after the break
Morocco increased their tempo in the second half as Jorge Vilda’s side searched for the goal that would reward their pressure.
Algeria continued to stay compact, making it difficult for the hosts to find space in central areas.
The tactical battle predicted before kick-off was exactly what unfolded.
Morocco needed patience, while Algeria looked to stay disciplined and wait for moments to break forward.
Vilda turned to his bench as the match moved into its final stages, introducing experienced captain Ghizlane Chebbak in the 70th minute after Ibtissam Jraidi had earlier entered the contest.
Those changes gave Morocco more attacking presence and helped increase pressure on the Algerian defence.
Algeria also made changes, with Boutaleb, Khiril, Bekhaled and Alaouache introduced as Benstiti looked to maintain energy and organisation.

With the game moving towards a draw, Morocco finally found the breakthrough in the 84th minute.

It was a vital goal for the Atlas Lionesses, who had been forced to work hard against an Algerian team that defended with concentration for most of the night.
Once ahead, Morocco managed the closing minutes with greater control.
Additional substitutions followed as the hosts looked to protect their advantage and see out a result that could prove important in the final group standings.
Algeria pushed for a response, but Morocco held firm to complete a second successive victory.
Hosts take major step forward
The win puts Morocco in a powerful position on top of Group A with six points and continues their strong start to the TotalEnergies WAFCON on home soil.
Algeria are level on six points with Senegal who earlier in the day defeated Kenya.
