No nation has lost more World Cup finals without winning the tournament than the Netherlands. Three final defeats, including the 1-0 loss to Spain in 2010, continue to frame the pressure that follows Oranje into every major tournament.

Three iconic Springboks are set to hang up their boots as three rising stars prepare to step up.

South Africa owes much of its recent dominance in world rugby to one area of the game: the scrum.

The Springboks’ front row has been the foundation of the team’s success, demolishing opposing packs, winning crucial penalties and creating the platform from which the Springboks have built their back-to-back Rugby World Cup triumphs.

However, even the greatest of careers eventually come to an end.

Three legendary Springbok props are entering the latter stages of their careers, while a new generation is already pushing its way to the front of the Bok front-row.

With coach Rassie Erasmus continually planning for the future, several players appear poised, primed and ready to fill some enormous boots (pun-intended).

THREE SPRINGBOK PROP VETERANS ENTER THE FINAL CHAPTERS OF THEIR CAREERS

Trevor Nyakane (37), Vincent Koch (36) and Frans Malherbe (35) have each played pivotal roles in South Africa’s rise to the summit of world rugby.

They will be remembered for very different unique characteristics, but all have one thing in common: Offering scrum dominance over the years.

Nyakane became a fan-favourite thanks to his infectious personality and trademark dance moves.

Koch earned a reputation as one of the most effective tightheads in broken play, regularly producing deft offloads and surprising moments of skill, while, Malherbe built his legacy through relentless consistency, world-class scrummaging and immense physicality around the park.

NYAKANE UNLIKELY TO PLAY FOR THE BOKS AGAIN

Unfortunately, all good things must come to an end.

Nyakane missed the entire 2026 Test season after being ruled out through injury. At 37, time is no longer on his side.

Moreover, the remarkable depth currently available to Erasmus at prop makes a return increasingly unlikely.

With younger options continuing to emerge and established stars already competing for places, it would be a major surprise if Nyakane pulled on the green and gold jersey again.

KOCH DOWN THE PECKING ORDER

Similarly, Koch appears to be moving down the pecking order.

Despite remaining fit and available for selection, Erasmus has increasingly turned to younger options.

Boan Venter and Gerhard Steenekamp have both been backed, while Neethling Fouché earned his Springbok debut as the national coaching staff widened its front-row pool.

With Malherbe expected to return and Thomas du Toit producing some of the best rugby of his career, Koch’s path back into the squad appears increasingly difficult.

BOK LEGEND NOT DONE YET, BUT ENTERING THE FINAL CHAPTER OF CAREER

Malherbe’s situation is slightly different.

At 35, he remains one of the most accomplished tighthead props of the professional era. Before his devastating injury setbacks, many considered him the best No3 in world rugby.

The Stormers and Springboks stalwart may still have another season or two (at best) left at the highest level.

However, the reality is that younger challengers are closing in.

Du Toit has elevated his game to new heights, while Wilco Louw has forced his way firmly into the national conversation through a string of dominant performances.

NEW ERA BEING USHERED IN

As one generation edges closer to retirement, another is rapidly establishing itself.

Louw has been one of South Africa’s most dominant scrummagers over the past two seasons.

His raw power and improved mobility have made him a formidable weapon, while his outstanding performances in Springbok colours have strengthened his case as a long-term successor.

Du Toit, meanwhile, has elevated himself into the elite bracket of world rugby.

After being named in the World Rugby Men’s 15’s Dream Team of the Year, he has firmly established himself among the game’s premier tighthead props.

His ability to play on both sides of the scrum only increases his value to Erasmus and the Springboks.

Gerhard Steenekamp also appears well-positioned to become a central figure in the next era of Bok rugby.

The Bulls star has regularly provided cover on both sides of the front row and offers the versatility modern international rugby demands.

After injury disrupted much of last season, he now has an opportunity to cement his place in the national set-up.

However, the battle for those coveted prop jerseys is far from over.

While, the aforementioned trio are strongly favoured to replace the outbound Bok legends, they will have to fight for this honour.

This is because Boan Venter, Neethling Fouché and Jan-Hendrik Wessels are all applying pressure from behind with the Rugby World Cup now just over one year away.

Wessels, in particular, offers unique value given his ability to cover both prop and hooker.

Stormers loose forward Ruan Ackermann has been suspended for a dangerous cleanout against Leinster.

The 30-year-old has been handed a three-match ban following his red card in the Vodacom URC semi-final in Dublin.

The incident occurred in the 69th minute, with the Stormers trailing just 13-11 and still firmly in contention before they eventually lost 20-11.

Referee Hollie Davidson dismissed Ackerman under Law 9.20(a), which relates to dangerous play at a ruck or maul.

The No 8 admitted he had committed foul play that warranted a red card during the disciplinary process overseen by judicial officer Simon Thomas.

Thomas ruled that the offence warranted a mid-range entry point of six weeks before reducing the sanction by 50% due to Ackermann’s acceptance of wrongdoing and previously clean disciplinary record.

The suspension means Ackermann will miss the Stormers XXIII’s opening three Currie Cup matches against Griquas, Boland and the Sharks.

However, the ban could be reduced to two matches if he successfully completes the World Rugby Coaching Intervention Programme.
