OPINION: Doping bans clear as mud
The year’s most famous tennis Grand Slam, Wimbledon, gets underway in London on Monday with a dark cloud hanging over the tournament.
Not only are some players unhappy with the prize money, but the banning last week of former women’s champion Marketa Vondrousova, for failing to take a drugs test, has left many players unhappy.
According to reports, Vondrousova declined a test one night when anti-doping officials arrived at her home late and she feared for her safety due to anxiety. She was subsequently banned for four years. mchezo.co.za
I don’t know all the ins and outs of drug testing and how tribunals and panels get to the length of bans, but it just doesn’t seem right that one is banned for such a lengthy period for not taking a test.
Vondrousova has stated she has never taken a performance-enhancing drug.
Who does one believe? Is it fair?
Other suspensions
Jannik Sinner was banned for only three months after testing positive for the banned anabolic steroid clostebol. He successfully claimed the drug entered his system inadvertently.
Iga Swiatek served only a one-month ban in late 2024 after testing positive for trimetazidine, also a prohibited substance. She said the positive test resulted from taking a contaminated, over-the-counter melatonin supplement.
In South Africa recently, rugby player Asenathi Ntlabakanye was handed an 18-month ban after testing positive for the non-specified hormone Anastrozole and self-declared the use of DHEA (a prohibited anabolic steroid). He said the medicine he took, which contained these banned substances, was cleared by the Lions’ team doctor.
And in Sunday’s Rapport, former Stormers rugby player David Britz claims he, too, received a ban, which ruined his career, after using medicine that had been prescribed to him by a team doctor.
There are fine margins in drug use in sport. And, of course, it’s difficult to know who uses banned substances out of choice and who might ingest them inadvertently. Some are performance-enhancing, some are not.
Sometimes it feels as if hearings into cases and subsequent findings are too set in stone and individual cases are not treated on their own specific merits, with their own intricacies.
What should ultimately only matter is that the cheats be found out and banned. And it doesn’t always seem this is the case.

Siya busy grooming his successor
Siya Kolisi is ushering in South Africa’s next loose forward star and Springbok captain as he prepares to lay down a marker in the inaugural Nations Championship, writes DEVIN HERMANUS.
Kolisi rarely finishes a match, yet the 35-year-old Test centurion empties his tank from his first step over the white line, setting the standard for his successors.
And who will succeed the most successful Bok skipper ever is being answered authoritatively, albeit in a fresh and youthful voice.
Look no further than Gqeberha on 20 June, when Paul de Villiers, Zachary Porthen and Riley Norton – all successive Junior Springbok skippers – starred as the world champions thrashed the Barbarians in their season opener.
SIYA: Young guns pushing Boks higher
The 23-year-old De Villiers, who delivered a string of Man of the Match performances for the Stormers in 2025-26, made an immediate impression off the bench against the Baa-Baas. He competes directly for Kolisi’s No 6 jersey, at national level and soon domestically, when Kolisi rejoins the Stormers in July.
Lock Norton (20) produced a standout 80 minutes in his first senior outing in green and gold, after captaining the Junior Boks to an unbeaten World Rugby U20 Championship triumph last year. Porthen, who with Norton scored a try in PE, became the youngest prop to debut for SA in the professional era against Japan in 2025, then aged 21.
Norton and Porthen, too, will rub shoulders with Kolisi at the Stormers, and director of rugby John Dobson has already mapped it out: “Siya will be able to help develop these players and mentor them in a way that nobody else could.”
De Villiers, Norton and Porthen are among six uncapped players in Rassie Erasmus’ 46-man Nations Championship squad to face England, Scotland and Wales from this week, alongside Vincent Tshituka, who captained South Africa A to a 40-0 rout of Zimbabwe at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium.

Tshituka, who can play lock and across the back row, was flanked by his former Sharks teammate Kolisi pre-match for the South Africa A and Bok clashes in the Friendly City – further proof of the conveyor belt of talismanic leaders that Siya is helping to drive.
A child refugee from the DRC in 2002 and SA citizen only since 2024, the 27-year-old Tshituka steered the Sharks to the Currie Cup title and played a senior role in their EPCR Challenge Cup trophy run two years ago, before earning his first Test cap last year.
Then there is the 19-cap Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu. Sidelined for the Nations Championship, the 24-year-old playmaker stepped up as a stand-in Stormers skipper last season. He also captained the Junior Boks to glory at the 2022 Six Nations U20 Summer Series and Western Province to the SA Rugby U21 Cup title in 2023.
Siya’s influence extends beyond the Bok newcomers. Fellow two-time World Cup winner Jesse Kriel made history in 2025 as the 67th Bok captain, and Kriel’s willingness to lead while deferring to Kolisi speaks directly to the culture and pathway he has built.

Sommet extraordinaire de la SADC : le cas de la transition politique à Madagascar au menu ce lundi
La Communauté de développement de l'Afrique australe (SADC) réunit ce lundi 29 juin, par visioconférence, les chefs d'État et de gouvernement de ses seize pays membres afin d'examiner la situation politique et sécuritaire à Madagascar. Prévue à 17 heures au Botswana, soit 18 heures à Madagascar, cette session exceptionnelle sera dirigée par le président sud-africain Cyril Ramaphosa, actuel président en exercice de l'organisation régionale.
Dans un communiqué diffusé ce week-end, la SADC a précisé que les échanges s'appuieront principalement sur les conclusions présentées par l'Organe chargé des questions de politique, de défense et de sécurité, qui suit de près l'évolution de la crise malgache.
Cette réunion constitue ainsi le deuxième sommet extraordinaire consacré à Madagascar depuis la prise du pouvoir par les militaires en octobre 2025. Dès les premiers mois de la transition, la SADC avait mandaté un Comité des sages conduit par l'ancienne présidente du Malawi, Joyce Banda, afin d'évaluer la situation sur le terrain et d'accompagner les différentes parties vers une sortie de crise.
À la demande des dirigeants de la région, les autorités malgaches avaient remis, le 28 février dernier, un document détaillant le calendrier de la transition. Ce programme prévoit notamment une concertation nationale, une révision du cadre juridique des élections, un référendum constitutionnel entre mai et juin 2027, puis l'organisation de l'élection présidentielle entre septembre et décembre de la même année.
Depuis cette remise officielle, la mission du Comité des sages s'est élargie. Au-delà de l'observation de la situation politique et sécuritaire, ses membres accompagnent désormais la mise en œuvre du programme présenté par Antananarivo. Lors de leur troisième mission d'évaluation, effectuée en mai, les discussions ont notamment porté sur les moyens financiers nécessaires à l'application de cette feuille de route.
Le contexte politique a également évolué ces dernières semaines. Le 3 juin, le chef de l'État, le colonel Michaël Randrianirina, a confié au Conseil œcuménique des Églises chrétiennes de Madagascar (FFKM) la responsabilité de conduire le processus de concertation nationale, une décision susceptible d'être évoquée lors des discussions régionales.
Les conclusions de ce sommet seront particulièrement attendues, à quelques semaines de la réunion ordinaire de la SADC prévue en août en Afrique du Sud. Elles devraient permettre de mesurer la position des dirigeants d'Afrique australe sur l'évolution de la transition malgache, ainsi que leur engagement dans la recherche d'une solution politique durable, fondée sur la stabilité institutionnelle, le dialogue et le respect de l'État de droit.
