Rennie names his 36 US soldiers

The All Blacks have released nine players from the touring group as Dave Rennie’s men turn their focus to a Rugby’s Greatest Rivalry series finale on American soil. catcross.org

Three of that number were ruled out through injuries picked up in Saturday’s 29-24 defeat by the Springboks at FNB Stadium: skipper and No 8 Ardie Savea (dislocated shoulder), centre Quinn Tupaea (MCL) and flanker Luke Jacobson (elbow).

In-form sprinter Sinesipho Dambile targets Ultimate Championship title

Despite enjoying a breakthrough season, sprinter Sinesipho Dambile believes he can still improve, and he’ll be looking to tighten up the phases of his race when he turns out at the three-day inaugural World Athletics Ultimate Championship in Budapest next week.

Dambile closed out an impressive Diamond League campaign by taking second place in the men’s 200m final in Brussels on Saturday night.

He completed the half-lap race in 19.89 seconds, with only two-time Olympic silver medallist Kenny Bednarek finishing ahead of him in 19.62.

“I’m still messing up my race a little bit. I was struggling on the bend and that’s something I need to fix before the Ultimate Championship,” Dambile said after the race.

“I’m confident that I will do even better than today. It’s an important goal for me.”

Memorable season

Dambile has been superb throughout the 2026 season.

After retaining his national half-lap title in Stellenbosch in April, the 200m specialist went on to win gold at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow in July.

He also achieved podium places at six Diamond League races ahead of the series final, including a victory at the Doha leg in June where he lowered his personal best to 19.74.

With Dambile having dipped under 20 seconds six times this year, it seemed only a matter of time before the 24-year-old athlete eclipsed the eight-year-old national 200m record of 19.69 held by Clarence Munyai.

For now, however, his immediate goal was to win the half-lap race at the Ultimate Championship.

And while Bednarek was the fastest 200m runner in the world this year, having twice clocked 19.62, Dambile refused to give him “favourite” tag ahead of the Ultimate Championship.

“Kenny Bednarek was the best man today (in the Diamond League final), but is he the favourite in Budapest? No, anyone on the track is the favourite.”

Other Diamond League results

Aside from Dambile, the rest of the SA contingent struggled to put up a fight at the top-flight Diamond League final.

Gift Leotlela (10.01) and Akani Simbine (10.03) finished fifth and seventh respectively in the men’s 100m race, Zakithi Nene (44.44) was sixth in a very fast men’s 400m contest, and Prudence Sekgodiso settled for eighth place in the women’s 800m event in 2:02.34.

Competing in the men’s T63 100m invitation race, which was not an official Diamond League event, amputee sprinter Puseletso Mabote secured victory in 12.12.

CAF Confederation Cup 2026/27 Preliminary Round first-leg results

Several of Africa’s leading sides took commanding first-leg leads in Saturday’s Preliminary Round ties in the TotalEnergies CAF Confederation Cup 2026/27, but other clashes remain delicately poised.

Angola’s Primeiro de Agosto won 2-0 away at Green Mamba of Eswatini and will be confident of completing the job in the return leg next weekend.

Shooting Stars of Nigeria were 1-0 winners at home to Tunisia’s CS Sfaxien, with Lucky Emmanuel scoring the only goal in the 25th minute at the MKO Abiola Sports Arena in Abeokuta. The Nigerian side face a tough away leg in a tie that remains intriguingly poised.

Al Ahly Tripoli, with several new signings in their squad, were 3-0 winners away at Zanzibar outfit KMKM and will be overwhelming favourites to advance from the tie.

Zambia’s Red Arrows were 2-0 home winners against FC Rouge of Madagascar at the Levy Mwanawasa Stadium, with Eliya Mundanji heading the opener in the 39th minute before Alassane Diarra doubled the advantage on 57 minutes.

Arrows will take a useful cushion into the return leg in Madagascar, with the winners of the tie to face South Africa’s Kaizer Chiefs in the Second Preliminary Round.

But Togolese side ASKO de Kara hold a 5-0 advantage from their away leg against AS ZAM of Niger and have one foot in the next round.

Black Bulls of Mozambique edged Atomic Ngomé of Comoros 1-0 in the away leg of their tie, while Kabuscorp de Palanca of Angola won 2-0 at Namibia’s UNAM.

The clash between AS Douanes of Mauritania and Hafia FC of Guinea ended 2-2, giving the Guinean side a useful platform with the home leg still to come. The winners of the tie will face Algeria’s CR Belouizdad in the Second Preliminary Round.

Mali’s FC Diarra will take a slender 1-0 lead over Nations FC of Ghana into the second leg of their tie.

The return legs in the First Preliminary Round will be played from September 11-13.
