Updated LOG after Mamelodi Sundowns drop points in title race

Mamelodi Sundowns dropped points for the first time in 2026 after being held to a 1-1 draw by Stellenbosch FC at Loftus Versfeld on Wednesday night. h-doctor.club

Miguel Cardoso’s side looked on course to extend their impressive run after Tsiki Ntsabeleng gave them the lead in the first half.

Points were shared

However, a late penalty from Tshegofatso Mabasa ensured the points were shared, bringing Mamelodi Sundowns’ 10-match winning streak in the Betway Premiership to an end.

The result leaves Mamelodi Sundowns second on the log, one point behind Orlando Pirates, although they still have a game in hand.

Stellenbosch remain in ninth place, just two points outside the top eight.

Mamelodi Sundowns dominated possession early on, but it was the visitors who threatened first when Devin Titus forced a block from goalkeeper Ronwen Williams.

The hosts responded in the 27th minute, with Ntsabeleng finishing neatly after a quick exchange with Arthur Sales.

Despite continued pressure from the Tshwane side, they were unable to extend their lead.

Created chances

Stellenbosch grew into the game in the second half, creating chances through Iqraam Rayners and Omega Mdaka, while Sage Stephens produced key saves to keep his side in contention.

The decisive moment came late on when Chumani Butsaka was fouled in the box.

Mabasa initially saw his penalty saved, but reacted quickest to slot home the rebound in the 86th minute.

Mamelodi Sundowns pushed for a winner in the closing stages but were unable to break through again, settling for a draw that tightens the race at the top of the Betway Premiership standings.

Masandawana will next be in league action on Sunday, 26 April against 10th-placed Richards Bay at the Richards Bay Stadium.

Kick-off is at 17:30.

Wolvaardt Sparkles with Century as Proteas Women Seal T20I Series Victory Over India

Laura Wolvaardt delivered a masterclass with the bat, striking a century in a commanding partnership with Suné Luus to guide the Proteas Women to a record-laden nine-wicket win in the third T20 International against India, securing an unassailable 3-0 lead in the five-match series at the DP World Wanderers Stadium, in Illovo, Johannesburg, on Wednesday, 22 April, 2026.

Wolvaardt produced a career-best 115 off 53 balls, including 14 fours and five sixes, alongside Luus’ unbeaten 64 off 42 deliveries (6 fours, 2 sixes), as the hosts completed their highest successful chase after India posted 192/4, built on half-centuries from Shafali Verma (64) and Harmanpreet Kaur (66).

South Africa won the toss and asked the visitors to set a score. India took on that challenge with aplomb, with openers Smriti Mandhana (37) and Verma combining to take their side to 51/0 at the end of the powerplay.

Their stand was broken in the ninth over when Nonkululeko Mlaba (2/31) struck twice in consecutive deliveries, removing Mandhana and Jemimah Rodrigues (0) to reduce the tourists to 68/2.

Despite the setback, Verma continued to lead the charge, combining with captain Kaur for a 73-run partnership. Verma brought up her 16th T20I half-century as India crossed the 100-run mark in the 12th over.

South Africa’s next breakthrough finally came off the bowling of Nadine de Klerk (1/27), with Verma caught in the deep in the 16th over with the score 141/3.

Following her dismissal, Kaur found support from Richa Ghosh (18*), with the pair adding a valuable 51 runs late in the innings. Kaur raised her bat for a 16th T20I half-century before being run out on the final ball, as India posted a challenging 192/4 from their 20 overs.

In reply, the Proteas Women made a blistering start. Led by Wolvaardt, the hosts raced to 72/0 in the powerplay, with the captain striking a 23-ball fifty – the fastest by a Proteas Woman in the format.

Despite the field spreading, the pair showed no signs of slowing, reaching 115/0 at the halfway mark.

Maintaining a scoring rate above 10 an over, Wolvaardt and Luus continued to dominate, with Luus bringing up her eighth T20I half-century before Wolvaardt followed with the quickest century by a South African woman and the joint third-fastest in women’s T20I cricket.

With both batters in full control and victory in sight, the pair added another milestone, registering South Africa’s highest partnership for any wicket in the format (183) before Wolvaardt was eventually dismissed in the 16th over by Shreyanka Patil (1/30).

Luus then sealed the win with a match-winning six, securing victory and the series with 21 balls remaining on a historic night for the Proteas.

The fourth T20I will take place at the DP World Wanderers Stadium on Saturday, 25 April from 18:00 SAST.

Home fortress Ellis Park an ally for Lions in big URC clash against Connacht

The Lions will again bank heavily on playing at home in familiar surroundings when they come up against Connacht in a massive United Rugby Championship round 16 match at Ellis Park on Saturday.

The Lions will be desperate to pick up as many log points as possible ahead of their two-match mini tour of Ireland from next week. They face Leinster and Munster away in their final two games before the top eight are confirmed.

As things stand, the Lions are fourth with 48 points. They are being pursued by Ulster (fifth, 47), Munster (sixth, 46), Cardiff (seventh, 46), the Bulls (eighth, 45) and Connacht (ninth, 44).

The Lions have never finished a regular URC season in the top eight to feature in the playoffs.

Five straight home wins

Having beaten Glasgow Warriors last weekend and picked up all the points on offer, Ivan van Rooyen and his men will be keen to do the same against Connacht before their away trip where picking up any points will be a bonus.

The Lions will be confident this weekend having picked up five straight wins at Ellis Park – against Glasgow (54-12), Dragons (42-26), Edinburgh (54-17), the Stormers (24-10) and the Sharks (34-22).

Their last defeat, and only loss at home at Ellis Park this season, was on 31 January, against the Bulls (52-17).

Record against visitors

Earlier in their campaign, the Lions also beat Ulster 49-31 and the Scarlets 29-18 on home soil.

Making Ellis Park something of a fortress was one of the goals of Van Rooyen and the Lions at the start of the season and it appears they have achieved that.

Another win against Connacht, who’re coming off a surprise and good win against the Stormers in Cape Town last weekend, would significantly boost the team ahead of their Ireland trip and hopes of making the knockouts rounds.

The Lions will also take confidence of a decent recent record against the Irishmen into this weekend’s match, having won against them 26-7 at Ellis Park last season as well as 38-14 in Galway the season before.

Sichenje returns from injury as Charlton suffer home defeat

Kenya national team defender Collins Sichenje returned from injury and straight into starting XI but was not able to stop Charlton Athletic from losing at home on Wednesday.

The former AFC Leopards defender was among the nine changes made by coach Nathan Jones as they hosted Ipswich in a EFL Championship fixture at the Valley.

Apart from Sichenje, other players, who returned to the starting XI include Thomas Kaminski, Macaulay Gillesphey, Jayden Fevrier, Conor Coventry, Joe Rankin-Costello, Charlie Kelman and Tyreece Campbell.

Charlton lost 1-0 to Ipswich

However, the Addicks fell to a 1-0 defeat. Charlton opened the scoring inside the first minute. With just 42 seconds on the clock, Campbell raced onto a loose pass from Ben Johnson.

He fired the ball towards goal, but saw his shot saved by Christian Walton and Greg Docherty was on hand to fire home the rebound to put the Addicks in front.

With 58 minutes on the clock, the Tractor Boys went ahead via a penalty when Macaulay Gillesphey was adjudged to have fouled Darnell Furlong in the box. Jaden Philogene stepped up and converted the spot-kick.

Sichenje return good news for McCarthy

Thomas Kaminski got a hand to it, but it got away from the Charlton number one, and Ipswich had the lead.

The return of Sichenje will be good news to Kenya head coach Benni McCarthy, who missed the defender during their FIFA Series matches.

Harambee Stars is preparing for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) and the South African legend would love to see his players fit and available for selection.
