‘We can get better,’ says Kolisi after Boks take 2-1 lead in series against All Blacks

Despite helping his team down the All Blacks 29-24 at the FNB Stadium in Soweto on Saturday to take a 2-1 lead in Rugby’s Greatest Rivalry series, Springbok captain Siya Kolisi believes they have yet to play their best rugby. esporist.org

After losing the opening match of the four-Test series 33-16 at Ellis Park, the Boks have bounced back with a 33-26 win in Cape Town, and another positive result in the third Test to take the lead ahead of the final Test in Baltimore, USA, this coming weekend.

Although the Boks lost the first game, Kolisi, who didn’t play in that match because of injury, claims that was their best overall performance, with him explaining they can deliver even more than what they have done in their two wins since.

“The first game (loss at Ellis Park) I thought we played better than these past two games (wins in Cape Town and Soweto). We just didn’t convert (in the first Test),” explained Kolisi.

“But the more we play together the better we get. A lot of us have played together for a long time, but that doesn’t mean we will automatically gel when it comes to a game.

“I still feel there is so much more we can do better, because I have seen us when we are at our best. They [All Blacks] are a very good attacking side but our defence will definitely get better. Also on attack, there are opportunities that we should be taking.

“We will see (in the review) what we can do better. I think playing together more always helps, but injuries happen and some guys need to get game time. So we can definitely get better and I am looking forward to the improvements we can make next week.”

Personal milestone

Kolisi reached an impressive personal milestone with the result against the All Blacks, becoming the most successful Bok captain in terms of wins in history.

On Saturday he led the team to their 55th win, moving clear of John Smit, who he had been tied with after last week. But, as always, Kolisi was quick to credit the team and coaching staff.

“If this were tennis it would be different, but this is a team sport. It shows the work Rassie (Erasmus) and his coaching staff put in. We’ve got so many leaders in this side that I really only have one job to do, which is focus on my own game,” said Kolisi.

He also hailed the match taking place in historic Soweto, with this just the fourth game the Boks have played at the FNB Stadium, and first since 2013, and mentioned the kids running beside the team bus to try catch a glimpse of the players while many people from the area couldn’t afford tickets.

“It was really special (to play in Soweto). We always say we won’t just say thank you in words, but through our effort (on the field). They (people of Soweto) can’t afford to come and watch us play,” said Kolisi.

“But seeing that, and understanding the history of this place, and the young people who fought so that we could be sitting here today, that’s why we wanted this game here. That’s what we play for, not just the people who can afford it, but everyone.”

Riley set for new Stormers role

Former Junior Boks captain Riley Norton may be utilised as more than just a lock for the Stormers this season.

According to Rapport, the Cape club is grooming Norton to follow in the footsteps of Bok great Pieter-Steph du Toit and Franco Mostert by becoming a lock who can also dominate at blindside flank.

Director of rugby John Dobson has been regularly deploying Norton at No 7 in training as the Stormers prepare for the new Vodacom URC season.

The idea is to turn the highly-rated youngster into the kind of versatile forward prized by Springbok coach Rassie Erasmus.

At 117kg and 1.99m, Norton has a physical profile similar to Du Toit and Mostert, and shown the work rate required to make the transition.

In his first appearance for the Boks against the Barbarians in June, he played all 80 minutes, carried eight times, completed all 11 of his tackles, and won four lineouts.

A hamstring injury ultimately prevented him from making his Test debut against England at Ellis Park.

Now Dobson is looking to get the 20-year-old back on the field, with Norton in contention to feature in a pre-season warm-up game against the Vodacom Bulls at Faure Street Stadium in Paarl on Friday.

“We are very happy with where Riley is now,” Dobson told Rapport. “He definitely recovered from his injury quicker than we expected. Credit to him for his work ethic. He is known for that.”

Norton could make his Stormers debut against Connacht in Galway on 25 September.

Wallabies blow golden opportunity

Wallabies coach Les Kiss has lamented his side letting Argentina “off the hook” in Mendoza on Saturday.

Kiss’ four-match win streak came to an end with Australia failing to exploit a late two-man advantage in a 28-28 draw.

Since Kiss took the reins from Joe Schmidt, Australia secured a 27-21 victory last week against the Pumas and had two successes against Japan before failing to capitalise on 14-0 lead in Mendoza.

Even so, the result gave the Wallabies a 1-0 series win, their first in Argentina.

“It’s difficult to come here and do what we did. But we let them off the hook a couple of times,” said Kiss.

“We were up two tries to nil in that first half, and just gave them field position, gave them opportunity, and that brought the crowd back in, that brought the energy back into their game.

“It was always going to become a dogfight from there on in,” he added.

“But the boys had a lot of defence to do in their own line, and I thought there was some really good stuff that came from that area.

“A series win, a trophy. There’s some good stuff in there as well. But we know we have things to work on.”

ALSO: Boks, All Blacks suffer big injury blows

It was a bruising affair, dominated by eager forwards, with Australian playmaker Carter Gordon a key casualty, limping off late in the second half.

Argentina did at least halt a run of three straight defeats, although they remain on just the single victory this year, against Wales in July.

Australia opened the scoring halfway through the first half courtesy of captain Harry Wilson in a move stemming from a lineout.

After Los Pumas lock Franco Molina was sent to the bin, wing Max Jorgensen extended Australia’s advantage.

The game then turned on a yellow card for Wallabies lock Jeremy Williams, with Argentina responding through captain Pablo Matera despite being a man down themselves.

Back to full strength, the hosts levelled things up after Ignacio Mendy burst through a gap to score as the teams went into the sheds at 14-14.

The forward battle continued after the break as flanker Fraser McReight restored Australia’s lead, only for hooker Ignazio Ruiz to level up again.

Flanker Matera barged over for his second after Argentina went through 23 phases against a desperate defence.

The Pumas then imploded, receiving two yellow cards in quick succession for deliberate knock-ons by their two most experienced backs.

Lucio Cinti went first and flyhalf Santiago Carreras followed, giving away a penalty try in the process to level the scores at 28-28.

Despite playing the last 10 minutes with a significant advantage, Australia did not come close to snatching a winning score.

“We put ourselves in the position to win … we’re hurting, we really wanted to win that.” said Wilson.

“But to bring back the trophy’s great … it brings some momentum and confidence into the group.”

WALLABIES – Tries: Harry Wilson, Max Jorgensen, Fraser McReight, penalty try. Conversions: Ryan Lonergan (3).

Boudraâ : «On a raté plusieurs occasions»
