Ashwin questions Samson omission from Zimbabwe tour

Former India all-rounder Ravichandran Ashwin believes Sanju Samson was hard done by after being left out of the T20I squad for the three-match series against Zimbabwe.

On Monday, the BCCI announced the squad for the Zimbabwe tour, with Samson’s omission being the most notable. As many as six changes were made to the current India squad. Along with Samson, Washington Sundar and Ravi Bishnoi were also left out.

Ashwin disagreed with the decision to drop Samson, who only plays one format. While praising Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, he questioned the need to fast-track the youngster at Samson’s expense.

“Sanju played a brilliant knock in the T20 World Cup. After that, he smashed it for CSK in the IPL this year. I haven’t seen him this consistent before. He was in a great phase, so I felt this was a bit harsh. I have been saying this for a long time. It’s not about Vaibhav Sooryavanshi. I don’t know when we will understand this. I am a big fan of Vaibhav Sooryavanshi. He will play and no one can stop him. What’s the hurry?” Ashwin said on his YouTube channel.

Ashwin went a step further, saying such selection calls could have unintended consequences by affecting players’ confidence and the overall team environment.

“If two players who are doing well in the team are shown a lack of confidence like that, all the other players will think they could be next. If they believe they are next, why would they play at a higher strike rate? They will play safe. Instead of scoring 50 off 25 balls, they will score it off 32 balls. The eventual loser will be Team India,” he added.

Prabhsimran Singh has come into the squad as Samson’s like-for-like replacement for Zimbabwe series.

Samson is currently in Nottingham with the India squad but is unlikely to feature in the third T20I.
