India’s newly-appointed T20I captain Shreyas Iyer admitted that his side could not execute their plans against England after the hosts registered a convincing nine-wicket win in the fourth T20I in Bristol, on Thursday, to seal the five-match series 3-0.
Speaking during the post-match presentation, Shreyas said India did not have enough runs on the board and he also felt the bowlers could not execute their plans well. “It was a disappointing one,” he said. “158 wasn’t a perfect total on the board and eventually we saw how quickly they chased it down. When we came out to bowl, I just asked the bowlers to repeat the length as much as possible because top of the middle and leg stump were hard to get away. I think we were a bit short on our execution. When we tried change of pace or something else, they got boundaries.”
Batting first, India was struggling at 48/3 inside the first seven overs after Vaibhav Sooryavanshi (15), Abhishek Sharma (16) and Ishan Kishan (4) were dismissed cheaply. Shreyas then played a captain’s knock of unbeaten 80 runs to help India post a respectable total, 158/7.
England, on the other hand, chased down the target inside 14 overs as captain Harry Brook (79*) and Phil Salt (59*) stitched together an unbeaten 146-run partnership.
Under the leadership of Shreyas, the 2026 T20 World Cup-winning squad has lost five T20I matches. Looking ahead, he said the team is going through a transition phase and needs to improve quickly in overseas conditions.
“Happy with my performance but when it’s not in a winning cause, it goes to the side,” he added. “So I want to contribute to wins. This is a transition phase and we will be making a lot of mistakes. A lot of youngsters were playing in these conditions for the first time. Mistakes will be important to realise how we need to adapt in overseas conditions. It’s important to learn quickly.”
India will now aim to end the series on a positive note in the final T20I which will be played in Southampton on Saturday.
