The Indian cricket team recently witnessed a change in captaincy, with Shreyas Iyer replacing World Cup-winning captain Suryakumar Yadav. Following consecutive bilateral series defeats to Ireland and England, the leadership transition has become a major talking point, with supporters closely analysing the team’s identity under its new captain.
During India’s final T20I against England, RevSportz visited sports bars across Mumbai expecting the usual atmosphere. Instead, many venues were noticeably quieter. One remark from a supporter stood out: “Why don’t you try eating chewing gum?”
The comment, directed at Shreyas, referred to Suryakumar’s well-known habit of chewing gum during matches. While it drew laughter, it also illustrated how quickly supporters had begun comparing one captain with another.
To understand whether the leadership transition has influenced Team India’s fanbase, RevSportzspoke to cricket fans from different parts of the country. Their responses suggested that while captaincy sparks debate, it is rarely the sole factor shaping fan engagement.
Naman Jain, a 20-year-old university student from Mumbai, said: “Yes, a change in captain can affect my interest to some extent. Every captain brings a different leadership style, strategy and energy to the team, which influences how fans connect with Team India. For example, when Virat Kohli was captain, I felt more connected because I have always admired him. I really liked his mindset, passion and aggressive approach, which made me even more interested in watching and supporting the team. However, my support for the Indian team remains the same regardless of who leads the side.”
His response highlights an important distinction. While support for Team India remains unwavering, captains often become the face of an era, with their personalities leaving a lasting impression on supporters.
Others felt the conversation extends beyond captaincy. Angelina Yadav, a 19-year-old student from Haryana, believes Indian cricket is defined by transitions.
“Every captain has their own way of handling the team,” she said. “Some have a way of making their players shine, while others can’t even utilise the skill sets of their best players. The overall interest and viewing experience definitely change a lot. For example, MS Dhoni, Virat Kohli, and Rohit Sharma led their teams and also improved the overall quality of cricket.”
She added: “Right now, the team is going through a transition phase because experienced players are retiring and younger players are taking the lead, while the team is also experimenting and figuring things out.”
Her view reflected a common theme among supporters: leadership changes cannot be separated from the broader evolution of the team.
Geetika Agarwal, a 19-year-old university student from Kolkata, argued that management decisions influence fan engagement more than captaincy.
“Honestly, I believe that a change in the captain doesn’t affect my interest in watching or supporting Team India. A lot of fans have moved on from cricket because of the management change after the 2024 T20 World Cup. There wasn’t a huge difference when the captaincy was given to Shreyas Iyer, but the management decisions affect viewership.”
The responses revealed that supporters are unlikely to stop backing Team India because of a change in captain. Instead, captains shape the emotional identity of an era, while management decisions, team selection and the ongoing transition collectively influence how fans connect with the side.
That spontaneous comment inside a Mumbai sports bar may have seemed light-hearted, but it reflected a wider conversation among Indian cricket supporters. As Indian cricket continues to evolve under new leadership, one thing remains clear: fans are not just watching matches – they are watching the start of a new era.
