Sharmistha Gooptu in Nagoya
In a fight where she mostly dominated, Lovlina Borgohain won the women’s 75kg final against Bao Ziyi of China, the reigning Asian World Champion. The first round went to Lovlina 3-2, with the Indian Boxing contingent cheering her on from the benches.
The second round also went to Lovlina 2-0, making it then look like a Herculean task for the Chinese contender. In the final round, it was again Lovlina, who used her reach to repeatedly punch Bao, though she herself lost her balance and fell twice.
After the win, a radiant Lovlina said she was determined to give herself this birthday gift. “The last round was hard for me, and the opponent was strong, and as you saw I fell twice,” said the gold medallist. “This was the first time I played her, so I had no idea how she would play.”
Speaking about how she motivated herself before the bout, Lovlina said: “Maine apna hundred per cent lagaya. Ek second ke liye bhi maine nahi socha mujhe harna hai.”
As the media contingent here wished her a happy birthday, she laughed and said: “Yes, yeh mera bahut special birthday hai. Bahut bahut jyada achha lag raha hai.”
Lovlina’s win has completely lifted India’s boxing campaign here in Nagoya with a gold medal to start the day.
