Tilak Varma Named South Zone Captain for Duleep Trophy 2026 as Karun Nair Earns Recall

Tilak Varma has been named captain of the South Zone squad for the upcoming Duleep Trophy. The tournament will be held at the BCCI Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru from August 23 to September 10. Andhra batter Ricky Bhui will serve as the vice-captain. MN Vikram Varma, an experienced Level 2 coach from Andhra, has been appointed as the head coach.

Tilak was recently part of the India T20I team that beat Zimbabwe 3-0. His selection as captain reflects his growing stature in Indian cricket. The selection committee meeting was convened by Andhra Cricket Association secretary Sana Satish Babu. Former Andhra Ranji Trophy player RV Chandramouli Prasad chaired the panel.

The 15-member squad features veteran batter Karun Nair alongside promising young players. Karnataka’s R Smaran, who was the leading run-getter in the 2025-26 Ranji Trophy with 950 runs, is included. Hyderabad’s K Himateja also finds a place in the squad.

Shaik Rasheed, who was part of the India A team that beat Sri Lanka A 1-0, is also in the team. Goa batter Abhinav Tejrana has been selected as well. Tamil Nadu’s N Jagadeesan, who was also on the India A tour to Sri Lanka, will handle wicketkeeping duties.

The spin department will be led by left-arm spinner Tanay Thyagarajan and leg-spinner Shreyas Gopal. The pace bowling options include K Sai Teja, Tripurana Vijay, Vidvath Kaverappa, and M D Nideesh. The squad also includes H Aman Khan.

South Zone have received a direct entry into the semifinals. They reached the final in the previous edition but lost to eventual champions Central Zone. They will open their campaign on August 30 at the BCCI COE Ground 2. They will face the winner of Quarterfinal 2. The team will look to go one step further this time and win the title.

Who Is Ricky Bhui? Meet South Zone Vice-Captain for the 2026 Duleep Trophy

Ricky Bhui is an Indian cricketer. He is a right-handed batsman and occasional leg spinner. He scored an unbeaten hundred on his List A debut and also scored an unbeaten hundred on his Twenty20 debut.

He currently plays for Andhra in domestic cricket and Delhi Capitals in the Indian Premier League. In December 2015, he was named in India’s squad for the 2016 Under-19 Cricket World Cup. He is the youngest player to feature in the tournament so far. He has also captained the India U17 side for a Triangular series.

In January 2018, he was bought by Sunrisers Hyderabad in the IPL auction. He was the only player from the Andhra Pradesh Ranji team to make the cut for IPL 2018. He studied at Visakha Valley School in Visakhapatnam after graduation in 2020. He was bought by Delhi Capitals for 20 lakhs as an uncapped wicket-keeper in the 2024 IPL auction.

He was the leading run-scorer for Andhra in the 2018-19 Ranji Trophy with 775 runs in eight matches. In August 2019, he was named in the India Blue team’s squad for the 2019-20 Duleep Trophy. He was released by Sunrisers Hyderabad ahead of the 2020 IPL auction.

South Zone Look to Go One Better After Last Year’s Duleep Trophy Final Defeat

Central Zone won the Duleep Trophy after 11 years last year. They defeated South Zone by six wickets in the final held in Bengaluru. The match was closely contested and went down to the final day.

South Zone had set a modest target of 65 runs for Central Zone to chase. The target came after South Zone fought hard in their second innings. They scored 426 runs, which delayed Central’s victory.

However, Akshay Wadkar and first-innings centurion Yash Rathod steadied the innings. They guided Central to victory without further damage. Central reached the target at 66 for four in 20.3 overs.

Rajat Patidar, who also led Royal Challengers Bengaluru to an IPL title earlier this year, was delighted with the win. He praised his players for their character throughout the tournament. He also appreciated Danish Malewar and Yash Rathod for their batting performances.

South Zone captain Mohammed Azharuddeen said reaching the final would motivate his team for the long domestic season. He acknowledged that Central’s spinners bowled well. He admitted his team made some poor decisions with the bat. But he was happy that they fought hard in the second innings and did not give up easily.

“Landmark chapter in India’s sporting journey”: Rajnath Singh hails CWG 2026 performance

New Delhi [India], August 3 (ANI): Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Sunday hailed India’s performance at the 2026 Commonwealth Games, describing the event as a “landmark chapter" in the country’s sporting journey, marked by historic firsts, record-breaking performances and the emergence of a new generation of champions.

In a post on X, Rajnath Singh said India’s success was a reflection of the sustained investment in sports infrastructure, athlete welfare and grassroots talent under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

“The Commonwealth Games 2026 will be remembered as a landmark chapter in India’s sporting journey, defined by historic firsts, record-breaking performances, and the rise of a new generation of champions," he said.

“Under the visionary leadership of PM @narendramodi, India’s sustained investment in sports infrastructure, athlete welfare, and grassroots talent continues to translate into historic success on the global stage," the Defence Minister added.

Highlighting India’s boxing performance, Rajnath Singh said the country finished atop the boxing medal table and delivered its finest-ever Commonwealth Games showing in the sport.

“India finished atop the boxing medal table, delivering its finest-ever Commonwealth Games performance. No country has ever won more gold medals in boxing at a single edition of the Commonwealth Games, a remarkable achievement that underscores India’s growing dominance in the ring," he said.

He also highlighted India’s achievements in athletics, saying the country recorded its best-ever performance at a Commonwealth Games held outside home soil.

“Athletics reached unprecedented heights with India’s best-ever performance at a Commonwealth Games held outside home soil. The Games witnessed several historic firsts, including India’s first-ever medals in both the men’s 5000m and 10000m at a single Commonwealth Games, the first decathlon medal, historic Judo golds, and many other pathbreaking achievements," Rajnath said.

The Defence Minister also praised the performance of Indian para-athletes, noting the country’s historic achievements in para-athletics.

“Para-athletics also reached a historic milestone, with India securing its first-ever Commonwealth Games gold in the men’s Shot Put F57 event and registering the nation’s first double podium finish in the category, highlighting the growing strength and depth of Indian para-sport," he added.

Congratulating the Indian contingent, Rajnath Singh said the performances reflected the dedication of athletes, coaches and support staff, as well as the strength of the country’s sporting ecosystem.

“These remarkable performances reflect the dedication of our athletes, coaches, and support staff, and the strength of a sporting ecosystem that continues to nurture excellence. Heartiest congratulations to every member of Team India. The nation is immensely proud of you," the Defence Minister concluded.

The curtains came down on the 2026 Commonwealth Games after 11 days of competition, with Scotland formally handing over the Commonwealth Games flag and ceremonial baton to India, hosts of the landmark centenary edition in 2030, during a glittering closing ceremony.

The 2030 Commonwealth Games will be held in Ahmedabad, making India only the second nation after Australia to host the multi-sport event on more than one occasion. India had previously staged the Games in New Delhi in 2010.

The Commonwealth Games flag and baton were presented to India’s representatives, Olympic gold medallist Neeraj Chopra, Indian Olympic Association (IOA) president PT Usha, and Gujarat Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi as part of the official handover ceremony.

India also had plenty to celebrate on the sporting front, finishing fourth in the medals table with a haul of 39 medals, 13 gold, 17 silver and nine bronze, to cap off a successful campaign. Although India’s tally was lower than the 61 medals won in Birmingham in 2022, the context tells a different story.

Thirty of those medals had come in sports that were dropped from the Glasgow programme. With only 122 athletes compared to 210 four years ago, India still managed to maintain its fourth-place finish while producing an even better medal conversion rate, with 38 athletes returning home with medals.

Long-distance runner Gulveer Singh was the only Indian to win two medals. With the ceremonial handover complete, the focus now shifts to Ahmedabad, which will host the centenary edition of the Commonwealth Games in 2030. (ANI)

Nabi in, Bumrah’s absence may pave the way for Brar’s Test debut

Jasprit Bumrah (PC:BCCI)

It’s now official — Jasprit Bumrah is out injured and won’t be travelling to Sri Lanka for the upcoming two-Test series, starting in Galle on August 15. The Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee picked Auqib Nabi as the senior fast bowler’s replacement. Good to see that the 29-year-old’s exploits in domestic cricket finally have been rewarded.

“Jasprit Bumrah has been ruled out of the upcoming Test series against Sri Lanka as he has not yet fully recovered from the left knee injury sustained during the ODI series against England,” said the BCCI press release.

It added: “The Men’s Selection Committee has named Auqib Nabi as Bumrah’s replacement. The Jammu and Kashmir fast bowler earns his maiden call-up to the senior national team.

“Nabi claimed 104 wickets across the last two Ranji Trophy seasons, including 60 wickets in the 2025-26 campaign, playing a pivotal role in Jammu and Kashmir’s maiden Ranji Trophy triumph. He was also part of the India A squad that toured Sri Lanka recently, where he claimed six wickets in two first-class matches.”

As India set off for their Lankan sojourn on Tuesday — they will play a three-day tour game in Colombo from August 7 before the first Test — the team management will have to resort to a Plan B in Bumrah’s absence. It might pave the way for Gurnoor Brar to make his Test debut.

The Punjab quick was in the squad for the one-off Test against Afghanistan in June, but he didn’t feature in the playing XI. Mohammed Siraj and Prasidh Krishna shared the new ball. Siraj will once again lead India’s pace attack, and it is learnt that given Brar’s profile as a bowler — his raw pace and the ability to extract bounce take the conditions out of the equation — he could be in serious contention to make the cut. Only last month, his 10-wicket match haul (a six-for in the second innings) helped India A win an unofficial Test against Sri Lanka A in Galle.

If the surface for Test series opener is a rank turner, then Gautam Gambhir & Co might be tempted to go with four spinners — Ravindra Jadeja, Kuldeep Yadav, Mavav Suthar and Saransh Jain — with Siraj being the lone fast bowler. Then again, irrespective of the conditions, playing just one pacer is always fraught with risk, especially when the squad doesn’t have a seam-bowling all-rounder. Seamers get some early help both in Galle and at the SSC — the venue for the second Test. Besides, in Sri Lanka, reverse swing comes into play once the ball gets older. Also, with four spinners, one bowler inevitably gets underbowled, as managing the overs becomes difficult for a captain.

For Nabi, he is someone who offers something different despite bowling medium pace. Will he straightaway come into the playing XI reckoning? Unlikely.

India’s updated squad for the Test series against Sri Lanka: Shubman Gill (captain), KL Rahul (vice-captain), Yashasvi Jaiswal, Rishabh Pant (WK), Sai Sudharsan*, Dhruv Jurel (WK), Ravindra Jadeja, Kuldeep Yadav, Manav Suthar, Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, Gurnoor Brar, Devdutt Padikkal, Saransh Jain, Auqib Nabi
